Hellen Lukoma Interview with Chimplyf’s Shamim Kawalha
When did you join and leave Obsessions?
Hellen Lukoma: I used to sing in church and act in dramas at school; I knew I was meant to be a star and a musician. In my senior one, I joined the Obsessions. It was a dancing group and later we started doing music. We had someone who guided us into music. As you grow up, you know what you want and fight for it.
I did not leave obsessions because we fought, but because different people were venturing into different things and wanted to grow into different areas.
We later formed HB toxic with my friend Brenda Nambi which did not last long. We enjoyed our days together. However some things pulled us off our group, Brenda was involved in fashion and that was the year I started acting in NTV series The Hostel.
How did you join Acting?
Hellen Lukoma: I was called by a friend to go and audition for “The Hostel” series. I hadn’t taken acting that serious until then. I was still working on my music and when I went through I worked so hard on acting because realized I was doing well after that different movies kept on calling me and now I am in “Beneath the lies” airing on Urban Television as Hellen Muntungi. I have enjoyed working with the team and I Love my character.
What is your current relationship with Dean Nsubuga, your ex?
Hellen Lukoma: I am not attacking Dean; I wish him the best in whatever his doing and I am happy he moved on. I have never asked him to come back to me because I moved on too and I am having a good time here.
What do you do to stay in shape?
Hellen Lukoma: I have no idea, I eat a lot and I never miss a meal. I think it’s in the genes or I will grow big by time but still I like myself like this (laughing).
How did end up in the fashion industry?
Hellen Lukoma: The industry pushed me into fashion. Because as a musician, I had to design my own attires and alas! I found myself a designer. I make my own clothes every December under the genesis fashion show. I am a good at designing though I am just learning how to tail them myself. Apparently people just tail for me according to what I ask. For some clothes at my shop I shop from china or Dubai and others I design myself.
Who is your best friend?
Hellen Lukoma: My mum is my best friend, because she’s the only person who will never leave me alone no matter the situation. I however have other friends like Leila Kayondo, she has been there for more in most cases, Fifi and Angel but my mother leads them all.
What is your favorite song by Hellen Lukoma and why?
Hellen Lukoma: My favorite song is “Namuli”, it’s a nice song and I has a nice beat. It’s also my latest son and that makes it my favorite song now. But I also like “Love Me Like You Do”.
What take-up your free time?
Hellen Lukoma: I read a book, research about new designs and sketch some. I also like to pray and talk to God.
Are you in a relationship?
Hellen Lukoma: I am single currently waiting for a real mature man to come find me. I am now relating with God and getting to knowing him more.
Is there something that people may not know about you that you can share?
Hellen Lukoma: I want people to know that I am sorry for putting my private life into lime light. I put my dirty linen in public but it wasn’t my wish. I really messed up big time and on behalf of my ex and I, I apologize. I am only human and I promise never to mess up like that again
What are your last words to the fans?
Hellen Lukoma: To my fans, I love you so much and I am planning more work for you. I have more series and more music. Listen to my new song, “Namuli” and my collabo with Leila. I am also planning my Genesis fashion show in December. I hope to see you there. I can’t explain how much you have loved me.
