Ian started his broadcasting career just after his graduation. He worked at CKDH in Amherst, Nova Scotia in the summer. He as well worked at CKCW in Moncton, New Brunswick. He later joined CHNS in the nearby Halifax, Nova Scotia. He joined CBC ( Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) in the year 1986. Ian before moving to Vancouver he worked for CBC bureaus in the Maritimes and Toronto, Ontario. He became a network reporter. He hosted the now-defunct programs Pacific Rim Report, Times 7 (a joint venture with The New York Times) as well as Foreign Assignment.
Ian was the anchor of the national segment of the defunct newscasts Camada Now for seven years (2000-2007). He became the co-anchor of CBS News: Vancouver, CBUT’s supper hour newscast in the year 2007 and moved in 2010 after the cancellation of the program.
