Nicklaus was born to Charlie Nicklaus a pharmacist and Helen. His father was an all-around athlete who played football for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Charlie was a scratch golfer and local tennis champion in his youth.
He was born in Columbus, Ohio, raised in the suburb of Upper Arlington, and attended Upper Arlington High School. He was a shooting guard who was an honorable mention in All-Ohio selection. At the age of 10, he began playing golf. He scored a 51 at Scioto Country Club for his first nine holes ever played. At age 12 and 13 he won the first of five straight Ohio State Junior titles.
At the age of 14, he won the Tri-State High School Championship with a round of 68 and recorded his first hole-in-one in tournament play. In 1956 at the age of 16, he won the Ohio Open highlighted by a phenomenal third round of 64, competing against professionals. Between the ages of 10 and 17, he won 27 events in the Ohio area.
In 1959 and 1961 he represented the United States against Great Britain and Ireland in winning Walker Cup teams. From 1957-1961, he attended Ohio State, where he majored in pre-pharmacy and had good grades in his first three years.
He, later on, he changed his programs to study insurance. He worked in the insurance field while he attended college. In late 1961, he announced that he was turning professional to support his family.
