James Blake Biography
James Blake Litherland is an English singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. He was born on 26 September 1988 in London, England.
He first received recognition for a series of 2010 EPs including CMYK and Klavierwerke, and he released his self-titled debut album in 2011 to critical praise. Blake was the runner-up in BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll. His eponymous debut album was released in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2011 for which he was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2011. His second album Overgrown was released in 2013 and awarded the Mercury Prize. He released his third album The Colour in Anything in 2016. His fourth album Assume Form was released in 2019.
Blake’s career, he has collaborated with artists including Mount Kimbie and Bon Iver, and has contributed production work to artists including Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Vince Staples, and Frank Ocean. Blake has also released remix work under the alias Harmonimix.
A few years after his debut album took UK bass culture down previously unimagined roads of introspection, he returned with the epic ‘Retrograde’.
Combining his heart-piercing songwriter side with a skyscraper of soaring electronics, ‘Retrograde’ takes the listener surfing on an emotional sine wave, an electronic soul testament that earmarks him out as the successor to the thrones long since vacated by Massive Attack and the Aphex Twin.
Retrograde is the perfect introduction to his second LP ‘Overgrown’, an incredible album that sees James growing as a singer and songwriter while at the same time returning to the brain melting electronic perfection of his early releases on Hemlock and Hessle, moving way beyond any post-dubstep pigeonholes to include stunning reinterpretations of both hip-hop and house.
James Blake is the son of musician James Litherland, and showed a strong interest and aptitude in music from a young age. He received classical training in piano as a child, and completed primary education at Grange Park Primary School, Winchmore Hill and secondary education at The Latymer School, Edmonton. Later on, he attended Goldsmiths, University of London, where he received a degree in Popular Music. While at school, Blake and friends hosted a series of “Bass Society” music nights that featured UK artists such as Distance, Skream and Benga.
In December 2016, he announced that he was donating proceeds from two of his shows in San Francisco (which were part of his 1-800 Dinosaur tour) to the victims of Ghost Ship Tragedy.
Music has been his obsession since his formative years. However, unlike normal teens, he preferred playing piano at home with lights out over performing with school choir or orchestra.
In 2012, he started working with iconic rapper Kanye West to create the song. However, after working for quite some time, they couldn’t create a release worthy music.
When he first found success, he struggled with the immense spotlight he got. He had to battle anxiety problem and also felt claustrophobic.
He had to take therapy to deal with his mental problems, which were the result of his reclusive lifestyle and his obsession to create perfect music.
