Jay began his carer as a basketball player as a consensus Top 50 recruit at Rolling Hills High School in Rolling Hills Estates in California. There he averaged 23.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game in 1982. From there, he was named First Team All-CIF, First Team All-South and MVP of the Bay League.
Jay was also referred to as the Best in the West by the Long Beach Press-Telegram and became a four-year starter for Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University on the men’s basketball team from 1982 to 1986. He then helped Lead Duke University into the Final National basketball championship game in 1986.
In his career as a college basketball player, Jay was able to score 1,062 points and grabbed 692 rebounds. He attained all these points while shooting over 55% from the field. In 1985, Jay was chosen to represent the USA basketball team on the United States National Select Team in Taipei, Taiwan.
Bilas earned his degree in political science and he was then selected in the fifth round of the 1986 NBA draft where he was chosen by the Dallas Mavericks.
