Silverheels Jr. has also followed in his father’s footsteps as an advocate for Native American rights. He is a member of the Mohawk Nation. In 2009, Silverheels Jr. was honored by the Native American Journalists Association with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Silverheels Jr. has had a modest acting career. He has appeared in several films and television shows, but he has never achieved the same level of success as his father. His father Silverheels Snr achieved his greatest fame as Tonto on The Lone Ranger (1949–1957). Silverheels Snr appeared in the film sequels: The Lone Ranger (1956) and The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold (1958).
When The Lone Ranger television series ended, Silverheels continued to be typecast as a Native American. On January 6, 1960, he portrayed a Native American fireman trying to extinguish a forest fire in the episode “Leap of Life” in the syndicated series, Rescue 8, starring Jim Davis and fellow Canadian Lang Jeffries.
