Perry first gained fame as a co-founder of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. He formed the company together with his Schoolmates Gary Sinise and Terry Kinney. Later, he moved to a small space in the Immaculate Conception Church in Highland Park. As of 2020, it has since grown into a notable theater company whose alumni include; John Mahoney and Joan Allen and Perr is still the company’s executive artistic director along with his other co-founders.
He first moved to Los Angeles in 1987 to pursue a career in film and television after being in Steppenwolf for almost two decades. From there, he bagged the role of Inspector Harvey Leek on a CBS drama called Nash Bridges. He then became a tough superior to Kevin Bacon’s detective in a 1998 thriller titled 1998. Perry’s main television and film credits were in the Human Stain (2003), Hard Promises (1991) and The Grifters (1990).
This was followed by other appearances in The West Wing (2003), The Practice (2003), Lost (2005), Cold Case (2006), Raines (2007) and a number of episodes in Grey’s Anatomy (2005) as Meredith Grey’s father.
