During this time, he was still a drummer, however, after someone stole his drum kit, he started playing bass. He joined ‘Shire,’ a heavy metal band, and started playing rhythm guitar to help him become a better songwriter.
Between 1985-1986, Stradlin was the band’s main songwriter. Stradlin contributed to the writing of most of the songs of ‘Appetite for Destruction,’ the debut album of ‘Guns N’ Roses’, which was released in 1987.
Some of the group’s well-known hits that he wrote or co-wrote include ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ and ‘Patience.’ He has recorded four studio albums with the band, which he left in 1991. Gilby Clarke replaced Stradlin as a guitarist.
