Early Life and Education

Mobisson was born to his father, Oliver Mobisson, and his mother, Tama Mobisson, on May 4, 1985, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, United States. He was brought up partly in Nigeria, where his father was working at Enugu State University as a professor of computer science. Nevertheless, Jidenna family relocated back to USA when he was 6 years old.

In 1995, the Mobisson family relocated to Norwood, Massachusetts, and later in 2000 to Milton. Jidenna attended Milton Academy, and he became a co-founder of the rap group Black Spadez, and started writing, arranging, and producing music. He attained his diploma in 2003 after releasing his first album with Black Spadez as their final project at Milton.  

Mobisson proceeded to Stanford University and attained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. After college, he pursued his music job while operating full-time as a tutor, driving between Atlanta, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Brooklyn, before signing a contract with Wondaland Records, belonging to the recording artist Janelle Monáe.
