Joe Beninati Biography

Joe Beninati is the television play-by-play announcer for the National Hockey League’s Washington Capitals. Along with color analyst Craig Laughlin, he provides Capitals game coverage for NBC Sports Washington.

Beninati has been with the Washington Capitals since 1994. During his years in broadcasting, he’s done freelance announcing for ESPN, ESPNU, Westwood One, WFAN. He was also one of the prominent hockey voices on Versus. Throughout his career, Beninati’s been awarded DC area Sportscaster of the year, along with claiming 12 Capital Emmy Awards.

Joe Beninati Early Life and Career Beginning

Beninati grew up on Long Island, listening to Marv Albert broadcasting Knicks and Rangers games. He attended Bowdoin College, where he still holds the school record for saves in a season (263) by a lacrosse goaltender.

In the beginning, Joe Beninati had no intention of becoming the play-by-play announcer he is today. Joe attended Bowdoin College to study biology and eventually to attend Harvard Medical School. A lacrosse and hockey player back then, Joe was injured in his freshman year. Due to this, his friend who had a radio show on campus who asked him if he would be interested in calling the hockey games with them.

He fell in love with broadcasting immediately. A local cable TV station overheard one of his broadcasts and asked him to call high school football and basketball games. By the time he was only 18-years old, Joe was calling three different sports on both radio and TV.

Joe Beninati is the play-by-play announcer for NBC Sport’s live-game coverage of the Washington Capitals. He has held the post since 1994.

An eight-time Emmy Award-winner, Beninati also regularly provides play-by-play for NBC Sport’s coverage of college sports, including football and basketball. Additionally, he served as the network’s announcer for its coverage of the Washington Kastles of WorldTeam Tennis.

In addition to his duties with NBC Sports, Beninati spent six seasons announcing NHL games for Versus, which is now NBC Sports Network. He has also called hockey games during the NHL regular season, Stanley Cup Playoffs, and World Cup of Hockey for other national outlets, including ESPN and NHL Radio, and served as the radio announcer for Westwood One’s coverage of the 2002 and 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

Beninati has also called select men’s college hockey games on College Sports Television (CSTV), now CBS Sports Network, as well as the NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament on ESPNU. Prior to joining NBC Sports, he spent five seasons as a radio and TV play-by-play announcer in the American Hockey League in Portland, Maine, and Providence.

Beninati is also recognized as one of the leading announcers in the sport of lacrosse. He calls collegiate regular season and NCAA Tournament action on ESPN and ESPNU. He has also spent more than a decade providing play-by-play for ESPN’s Major League Lacrosse coverage. His experience also includes four seasons calling college football for Versus and Westwood One.

In addition to ice hockey coverage, he has provided play-by-play for various ACC and CAA sporting events, Navy football, the Washington Mystics, Major League Lacrosse on ESPN, and the 2002 Winter Olympics and 2006 Winter Olympics hockey tournaments for Westwood One.
