Joe Fryer Partner, Joe Fryer Gay
Joe has been in a loving relationship with his partner Peter for more than a decade now. For a time, his nephew even referred to him as “Peter Partner.” I couldn’t be happier that we’ve found each other. And our families couldn’t be happier either. Recently, Joe’s dad was searching for a new church. He would only consider congregations that embrace the LGBTQ community. As a Christian Joe, that meant the world to him.
After even his 22 years after he first came out, he was still telling people. It happens, for example, when someone sees the ring on his left hand and makes a comment about his “wife.” Most of the time Joe politely corrects them and tells them he has a partner. On occasion, he just chooses to let it go.
Before he came out Joe’s mother wasn’t the very first to find out. During the fall quarter of his sophomore year at Northwestern University, Joe started to become friends with a group of students, mostly theatre majors, who were already out and proud. As he assimilated into the group, he didn’t really have to come out or say the words, “I’m gay.” It was just sort of assumed. And that’s what got the ball rolling, paving the way for him to share his truth with his family.
Fortunately, Joe has rarely experienced a negative reaction in his lifetime. At least one that he has witnessed. And for that, he is so grateful.
Recently, Joe did a story on Nathan Ivie, a Utah County commissioner. He’s Mormon, Republican, and represents one of the most conservatives regions of his state. He was married to a woman and has two kids but says he was living a lie. Earlier in 2019, at age 40, he came out. Joe asked him how it feels. “Free,” he said. “If Joe could use any word to describe it, it would be ‘free.’”

Joe Fryer NBC News
In October 2013 Fryer joined NBC News as a West Coast correspondent. He has covered some of the country’s immense stories, including the devastating Oso mudslide, fatal flooding in Colorado, deadly wildfires around San Diego, and the Isla Vista shooting rampage. He has also interviewed numerous prominent figures such as Jay Leno, Ringo Starr, Olivia Newton-John, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Olympian Kerry Walsh-Jennings.
Fryer KING 5 News
Previously, before he joined the NBC, he worked for KING 5 News in Seattle as a special projects reporter. He focused on both in-depth reports and daily assignments, covering some of the region’s most important stories: the Amanda Knox verdict, the historic vote approving same-sex marriage, and the Skagit County bridge collapse.
He traveled to Colorado to examine the state’s well-regulated medical marijuana industry. He visited both Boston and San Francisco to see what Washington can learn from other cities that removed Viaduct-like structures along their waterfronts.
And he has shared a number of heart-warming stories, including a feature on Snohomish students who helped a legally blind classmate accomplish her seemingly impossible dream of driving a car.
Fryer KARE-TV
Fryer came to the Northwest from Minnesota, which is his home state. He spent six years at KARE-TV, the NBC affiliate in Minneapolis, and was the first reporter from his station on the scene of the 35W Bridge collapse in 2007.
Joe also flew to Phoenix to cover the death of Minnesota Twins legend Kirby Puckett and took a couple of trips to Washington, DC, so he could produce a documentary on a Minnesota soldier who lost his legs in Iraq.
Perhaps Joe’s most memorable story was the tale of Nicklas Nelson, a brave 9-year-old boy who was born with webbed legs. Nick asked doctors to amputate his legs so he could learn to walk with prosthetics.
Before moving to Minnesota, Joe worked at WTVF-TV in Nashville, Tenn., WBAY-TV in Green Bay, Wis. and WKYT-TV in Lexington, Ky. He’s a proud graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
