Joe Johnston (Joseph Eggleston Johnston II) is an American film director, writer, producer, actor and former visual effects artist from Austin, Texas, United States. He is famous for his directing in movies like Rocket man (1991), Jumanji (1995), Jurassic Park III (2001), and Captain America (2011).
Johnston is famous for his directting work on all three Star Wars original movies. He was also the executive producer to Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) , Lumen (2015) and The creeps (2017). Furthermore, he co-produced periodic films such as The Rocketeer (1991), and The Wolfman (2010).

Joe’s television career started off with him serving as a design and special effects artist. Although he played the role of Death Star trooper on the original 1977 Star Wars film, he only received credits for his work as a concept artist and effects technician on the same film. The original Sar Wars film was written and directed by George Lucas.
Star Wars was officialy released in the United States on May 25, 1977, and subsequently became a successful hit. The film is the first of the original Star Wars trilogy. It was included as the fourth episode in the nine-part ‘Skywalker saga’.
Johnston was also one of four artists to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Lucas and Steven Spielberg’s film Raiders of the Lost Ark. He would rather continue to work as an effects expert.
He is also the author of Star Wars novel The Adventures of Teebo: A Tale of Magic and Suspense (1984), and The Star Wars Sketchbook (1977).

In 1989, Joe made his directorial debut with hit comedy adventure Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, starring Rick Moranis. In 1991 he directed the comic-book adaptation The Rocketeer. However, The Rocketeer was a commercial failure, as was his next, The Pagemaster – an animated and live-action movie. He bounced back by directing the family hit Jumanji, starring Robin Williams.
Jumanji was such a success that it earned over $260 million in the Box Office from just a $65 million budget. In 1999 he switched from effects-driven action films to the more personal biographical drama film, October Sky, starring the main actor a teenage, Jake Gyllenhaal. He was a 1950s West Virginia high school student who dreams of being a rocket scientist for NASA against his father’s wishes.
In addition, Johnstone has directed the third sequel project of Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, which earned over US$300 million at the box office. It was with western Hidalgo, starring Viggo Mortensen. He then took a six-year directorial break before signing on at a month’s notice to take over the 2010 remake of 1941 horror classic The Wolfman. The Wolfman starred Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins and was shot in England.
He was also selected o direct Marvel Studios superhero adaptation Captain America: The First Avenger. This was in part thanks to his experience with the period superhero film The Rocketeer. Captain America: The First Avenger was released on 22 July 2011 starring Chris Evans as the comic book hero and Hugo Weaving as his archenemy the Red Skull. He directed the thriller Not Safe for Work for Blumhouse Productions in 2012.
The Hollywood reporter then reported that he would helm 32 days of reshoots on the film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms due to its director Lasse Hallström being unavailable on 12 December 2017.
