His television career began in Wyoming as the Morning/Noon Meteorologist at KCWY News 13, where he rose to Chief Meteorologist in 2004. Joel returned to Colorado in 2015 to work as a lead prime-time meteorologist for WeatherNation, a nationally broadcast network based in the Denver area.

After three years at WeatherNation, Joel accepted a position as Chief Meteorologist at KYTX CBS 19 in Tyler, Texas. Joel and his family recently relocated to West Tennessee, where he works as the Chief Meteorologist for WBBJ-TV in Jackson on weekday evenings. In high school, Joel was an All-State Football player who excelled in both athletics and mathematics.

He was a football and academic scholarship recipient in college. He also interned at KMGH News in Denver and was a storm chaser throughout college, serving as treasurer of the American Meteorology Society at UNC.
