Aylward attended St. Joseph’s Grade school and went on to Prep High School, but graduated from Garfield High School in 1965. He graduated from the Professional Actor’s Training Program at the University of Washington in 1970.

He is best known for playing the previous DNC executive Barry Goodwin on the NBC TV arrangement The West Wing and for playing Dr. Donald Anspaugh on the NBC TV arrangement ER. He additionally provided his voice for Dr. Arne Magnusson in Half-Life 2: Episode Two.
Aylward was brought up in Seattle, Washington. He went to St. Joseph’s Grade school and went on to Prep High School, however, he moved on from Garfield High School in 1965. He moved on from the Professional Actor’s Training Program at the University of Washington in 1970. He was one of the originators, in 1973, of Seattle’s Empty Space Theater, and he worked consistently as an organized individual from the Seattle Repertory Theater for a long time until he turned into a TV and film performing artist during the 1990s. Hymn Flynt, co-maker of ER, first offered him a tryout subsequent to seeing him in a 1996 creation of “Psychopathia Sexualis” at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.
