John Boorman Filmmaker
Boorman first started working in the late 1950s as a dry cleaner and journalist. He then worked at Southern Television in Southampton and Dover and thereafter switched to TV documentary filmmaking. In 1962, he became head of the BBC’s Documentary Unit, based in Bristol. Boorman was offered the chance to direct the film Catch Us If You Can (1965), by producer David Deutsch after drawing his attention.
Boorman then went to Hollywood hunting for the opportunity to make larger-scale films like Point Blank, in 1967. He gained more acceptance in the U.S. in 1972 with Deliverance which was adapted from a novel by James Dickey.
It followed the tribulations of four urban men who face danger from an unexpected quarter while rafting through the Appalachian backwoods. The film starred Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox, and Ned Beatty. The film resulted in several award nominations as it became Boorman’s first true box office success.
Boorman was selected as the President of the main competition jury in November 2012 at the 2012 International Film Festival of Marrakech.
Boorman published his debut novel, Crime of Passion, in 2016.
