Crotty was born on July 15, 1969, in Orange, New Jersey, United States. He went to Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, New Jersey, and proceeded to the University of Virginia where he graduated in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in history.

At high school, Crotty was a McDonald’s All-American and second-team Parade All-American averaging 23 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals a game as a senior. He was recruited by Virginia, Notre Dame, Stanford, North Carolina, and Villanova, but eventually chose Virginia.

Crotty holds Virginia’s record for assists in a season with 214 from 1989 to 1990. He formerly held Virginia’s record for most career assists at 683, though was moved to second place after being overtaken by Kihei Clark on February 18, 2023. Further, Crotty was a second-team All-ACC Tournament selection in 1990, a third-team All-ACC selection in 1990 and 1991, and a first-team All-ACC Tournament choice in 1991.

Furthermore, He achieved exemplary mention All-America honors from The Sporting News and The Associated Press in 1990. In his NBA career, Crotty played in 477 games and scored a total of 1,903 points while playing for the Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Seattle SuperSonics, Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat, and Detroit Pistons.

Former HEAT point guard, Crotty, enters his 15th full season as a member of the HEAT broadcast team and his second as the team’s television analyst. The NBA expert will once again team with Eric Reid to analyze preseason, regular season, and postseason action for all games carried on FOX Sports Sun.

Crotty officially joined the HEAT broadcast team during the 2004-05 season, making his debut on the radio with the HEAT’s January 1st contest against the Charlotte Bobcats. Beginning with the 2011-12 season through the 2017-18 season, Crotty took an extended role with FOX Sports Sun and worked as a studio analyst for both regular season and postseason action.

During his solitary season with the Heat in 1996-97, he averaged 13.7 minutes, 4.8 points, and 2.1 assists while shooting 84.4 percent from the foul line, 51.3 percent from the floor, and 40.8 percent from the three-point range in 48 games.
