John Kilzer born in 1956, was an American , singer and songwriter from Tennessee whose music career spanned 30 years and who became a pastor after undergoing drug recovery. John a former two-year All-State and one-year All-American basketball player for Jackson Central-Merry. went to Memphis State in 1975 and was a four-year letterman in basketball. He graduated with a MA in English and later became full-time instructor at Memphis State from 1984-1987 as a professor of Modern Literature and Basic Composition. He completed his Master’s thesis on William Butler Yeats and Carl Jung.

John Kilzer Career
John signed a major recording deal with Geffen Records in Los Angeles, in 1987 . Red Blue Jeans, one of the songs his first recording, Memory in the Making, was a top-ten on AOR charts, and its music video appeared on MTV. He toured the states with the Moody Blues and Little Feat, then all of Europe with the Canadian band Tragically Hip. In 1992, he made his second recording, Busman’s Holiday, followed by more touring.

He signed a publishing deal with Belz Publishing between 1997-2000 and wrote songs mostly from Los Angeles and Nashville. Some of the people that have recorded his songs include; Roseanne Cash, Trace Adkins, Jimmy Davis, and Dobie Gray, among others. One of his songs was used on the television show Melrose Place.

John Kilzer who was a drug addict entered recovery in 2000. In 2005, he earned his M.Div. from Memphis Theological Seminary. From 2007 to 2009, he served as pastor of a two-point charge in Crockett County. In 2009, he served as Director of Theology and Arts at MTS ,before being ordained in 2010. That same year he began The Way, the recovery ministry at St. John’s. He was also awarded his PhD from Middlesex University in London, England, in 2010.

John Kilzer, a singer and songwriter from Tennessee whose music career spanned 30 years and who became a pastor after undergoing drug recovery, has died. He was 62.
Kilzer’s death was disclosed Tuesday by St. John’s United Methodist Church in Memphis, where he served as an associate pastor for recovery ministries. A cause of death was not disclosed. The church said in a statement that it was a sudden death.
According to biographies on websites for the church and Archer Records, the Jackson, Tennessee-native recorded two albums under the Geffen label, “Memory in the Making” in 1988 and “Busman’s Holiday” in 1991. Roseanne Cash, Trace Adkins and Maria Muldaur recorded his songs.
John Kilzer and the Scars were scheduled to play at the Beale Street Music Festival in May.
