John Larson Biography
John Larson is an American politician and businessman serving as the U.S. Representative for Connecticut’s 1st congressional district, serving since 1999. The district is based in the state capital, Hartford. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Larson is the former chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

Larson was born in Hartford, but in neighboring East Hartford, he spent most of his life. He grew up in a project for government accommodation. He was educated at East Hartford High School and the State University of Central Connecticut. He worked at George J. Penney High School (later Penney High merged with East Hartford High School) as a high school history teacher and an assistant athletics coach.
Before joining government service, Larson was also the co-owner of an insurance company in East Hartford. In 1971, Edward Zigler, founder of the Head Start Program, selected him as Senior Fellow of the Yale University Bush Center for Child Development and Social Policy.

Larson began his political career in 1977 when he served one term on the East Hartford Board of Education. He then served two terms on the East Hartford Town Council. Larson left the state senate in 1994, seeking the Democratic nomination for Connecticut Governor but was defeated in the primary by Bill Curry. Larson joined the private business for several years after being defeated for governor but was able to keep his political credentials.
