John Larson is an American politician and businessman serving as the U.S. Representative for Connecticut’s 1st congressional district, serving since 1999. The district is based in the state capital, Hartford. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Larson is the former chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

He was born on 22 July 1948, in Hartford, Connecticut, United States. He currently 70 years old.
John Larson Education
Larson was born in Hartford, but in neighboring East Hartford, he spent most of his life. He grew up in a project for government accommodation. He was educated at East Hartford High School and the State University of Central Connecticut. He worked at George J. Penney High School (later Penney High merged with East Hartford High School) as a high school history teacher and an assistant athletics coach.
Before joining government service, Larson was also the co-owner of an insurance company in East Hartford. In 1971, Edward Zigler, founder of the Head Start Program, selected him as Senior Fellow of the Yale University Bush Center for Child Development and Social Policy.

Larson began his political career in 1977 when he served one term on the East Hartford Board of Education. He then served two terms on the East Hartford Town Council. In 1982, Larson was elected to the Connecticut Senate from the 3rd district, based in East Hartford. He served six terms in that body, the last four as President pro tempore of the Connecticut Senate.

Larson left the state senate in 1994, seeking the Democratic nomination for Connecticut Governor but was defeated in the primary by Bill Curry. Larson joined the private business for several years after being defeated for governor but was able to keep his political credentials.
Due in part to serving in the Democratic Party and its local state connections, he narrowly defeated State Secretary Miles Rappaport in the Democratic primary for the 1st District when seventeen-year-old Barbara Kennelly gave up the seat to run for governor in 1998. Larson was appointed the vice president of the House Democratic Caucus on February 1, 2006. When Bob Menendez was appointed to the U.S. Senate, the former vice president, Jim Clyburn, moved up to the president. After the Democrats won control of Congress in the 2006 elections, Larson chose not to run for president of the rally— a post former chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rahm Emanuel, instead of running unopposed for re-election as vice chairman.

In 2010 Larson launched the 2010 Small Business Jobs Act, authorizing the development of the Treasury Department’s Small Business Lending Fund Program to invest in eligible organizations to boost the accessibility of credit to tiny companies.
