John Morales is an American award-winning meteorologist who joined NBC 6 as Chief Meteorologist in 2009. He is well known as the longest-tenured broadcast meteorologist in South Florida, serving as a reassuring presence for nearly 25 years.
Morales has both the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the National Wetter Association (NWA) stamp of approval. He had been awarded the coveted AMS Accredited Consulting Meteorologist distinction. He became Chief Meteorologist at WSCV Miami in 2003. John made the transition to English-language television in May 2009, joining NBC O&O WTVJ in Miami.

Jonh began his career in upstate New York to attend the meteorology program at the prestigious Cornell University. After his graduation in 1984, he was hired by the U.S. National Weather Service to work in Puerto Rico, Louisiana, and Washington DC. During his government career, John became a Lead Forecaster before accepting a position as Chief of the South American Desk at the National Center for Environmental Predictions.
John served as Chief Meteorologist for the Univision Network and its WLTV station in Miami from 1991 to 2002. He served as Chief Meteorologist for local station Telemundo, WSCV Channel 51 from 2003 to 2008. While there, he became the first Hispanic to replace and do so multiple times as a meteorologist on the Today show’s weekend edition of NBC.
Some of his many credentials, John holds the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Radio and TV weather casting and has won the Broadcaster of the Year Award from both organizations. In addition, he is accredited by the American Meteorological Society as a Certified Consulting Meteorologist and a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist. In 1997, Morales participated in Vice President Al Gore’s White House conference on global warming and climate change. John returned to the White House at the invitation of President Barack Obama in 2014 for the release of the National Climate Assessment.
