In 1999, John Nolan was enrolled in Taking Back Sunday by Jesse Lacey. He later would welcome Adam Lazzara to join the band. In 2002 the band would discharge their introduction album, Tell All Your Friends. He would leave the band in 2003 to seek a different musical direction alongside close-to-home contrasts with other band individuals.
In March 2010, he and Shaun Cooper returned to Taking Back Sunday. In 2011, the band discharged a self-titled collection that crested at number 17 on the Billboard 200, the first since Nolan’s rejoining. In 2003, John with his sister Michelle DaRosa formed the Straylight Run, together with drummer Will Noon and previous Taking Back Sunday bassist Shaun Cooper. Straylight Run went on to release two albums and four EP’s from 2004 to 2009. On October 27, 2009, his first solo album, Height, was released on Doghouse Records. John toured the Midwest and east coast with Person L and Brian Bonz in November and in January with help from Gabriel the Marine and Ocean is Theory.
In 2014 he provided the song “Here Comes the Wolf” to the soundtrack of the Jason Michael Brescia film, Bridge and Tunnel. The song was named for a few awards in the film festival circuit and was the beneficiary of “Best Original Song” at the 2014 Long Island International Film Expo. On the Gabriel the Marine track “Round and Round”, he provides backup vocals and co-songwriting credit. Nolan released his second solo album, Sad, Strange, Beautiful Dream on July 27, 2015. The album was a success following a successful PledgeMusic campaign.
