Early Life and Education

Born on January 11, 1946, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States, Piper attended and graduated from Wade Hampton High School. He then joined Wheaton College from 1964–1968, majoring in literature and minoring in philosophy. While in college, he originally wanted to pursue a career in medicine, but later decided to go into ministry during a bout of mononucleosis, while listening to the sermons of Harold Ockenga over the radio from his hospital bed.

Later, he graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. While at Fuller, he undertook several courses from Daniel Fuller and, through him, discovered the writings of Jonathan Edwards. Together with  C. S. Lewis, Edwards, and Fuller are well-known influences in Piper’s life and ministry.

He also earned his Doctor of Theology degree in New Testament Studies at the University of Munich, Germany (1971–1974) under Leonhard Goppelt. After completion of his doctorate, he taught Biblical Studies at Bethel University and Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, for six years (1974–1980).

  • Piper is best known in evangelical Christianity after the publication of his book Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist in 1986 and has continued to publish dozens of books further articulating his theological perspective.
