Bush nominated Roberts to the US Court of appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. after working in different departments of the government, President Bush nominated Roberts to the US Supreme Court on July 19, 2005, to fill a vacancy that would be created by the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
He also became the first Supreme Court nominee since Stephen Breyer in 1994. Bush then announced Roberts’s nomination in a live nationwide television broadcast from the East Room of the White House. However, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died on September 3, 2005, while Roberts’ confirmation was still pending before the Senate. This made Bush withdraw his nomination and made him the successor of O’Connor to be nominated for the Chief Justice position. Thereafter, Roberts has officially declared the new incoming Chief Justice in 2005 up to now.
