John William King James Byrd
Byrd, who was hitchhiking, took a ride, according to court records, from white supremacists John William King, Lawrence Russell Brewer and Shawn Allen Berry.
They however took Byrd to the logging road outside of town, instead of taking him where he wanted to go. After that they beat him, defecated and urinated on him and then chained him by his ankles to the truck and started driving. Though Brewer claimed Byrd’s throat was slit by Berry, forensics showed Byrd that he was trying to keep his head up as he was mercilessly being dragged but his head and arm were severed when his body hit a culvert. The three then took the remains of Byrd’s body and dumped them in a African-American church cemetery and proceeded to a barbecue.
The next morning Byrd’s decapitated head was found and police found a tool with “Berry” engraved and a lighter inscribed with “Possum”, John William King’s nickname. Investigators discovered 80 separate locations with Byrd’s remains strewn, along the road . The police believed the men were white nationalists and the murder was swiftly deemed a hate crime.
