Nitro Circus
Van Vugt, who is best known as “Nitro Girl,” became the first woman to flip a full-size dirtbike, and she holds multiple world records. Her willingness to never back down from a stunt earned her a mainstay position in the Nitro DVD series, Nitro Circus Live tour, and MTV show.
Also, as a former Canadian National Motocross Champion, Jolene switched gears from racing to Nitro, managing everything from BASE jumps off Travis’s dirt bike into the Grand Canyon to becoming the first female to backflip and frontflip in live shows.
Accident
Van Vugt has never watched footage of the accident that nearly killed her, but a video exists. At Nitro Circus, the cameras are always rolling, and in the clip, she was seated in a plastic whiskey barrel, her head and shoulders exposed, and a tow rope in her hand.
However, on this test run, she was testing out a winch that will replace a 50-foot ramp and the whiskey barrel, a new contraption similar to her motorized Barbie car. The winch sprang into action, pulling her toward a ramp at 30 mph. She let go, and in a moment, the barrel began to wobble and careen off course on two wheels. “I couldn’t jump off,” she says. “I was a sitting duck.”
Her right elbow hit scaffolding, and then her face smashed into a pole a couple of feet away. With her still inside, the barrel slammed onto the concrete 5 feet below, and the video faded to black.
