Jon Gibson Musician
After Jon left the army at the age of 20, he signed as a rhythm and blues artist with Dick Griffey’s Constellation Records (SOLAR). His debut as a singer and songwriter for The Jacksons ‘ keyboardist, Bill Wolfer’s project “Wolf” (on the Constellation label), came as a guest vocalist and songwriter on several songs.
The album included singing background vocals by Michael Jackson on the collaboration between Jon and Wolfer’s “So Shy.” Griffey circulated the demo tape of Jon, with people believing they listened to Stevie Wonder (who, while on tour in 1983, Gibson sang “Ebony and Ivory”).
With Constellation, Jon issued his debut album Standing on the One (1983), and produced the 1983 single “She Told Me So” via Elektra Records (including a music video that premiered on MTV).
However, when Jon signed with Frontline Records in 1986, Jon, torn between his desire for pop stardom and his need to bear witness to his faith, entered the Christian music industry.
Jon recorded his 10th solo album, The Horizons of Knowing, in 2009, with plans to release it in late November or early December 2010. The album was never released, however. Jon released the single “On a Mission” as a download on June 7, 2010.
Certainly, his 2012 album The Storyteller (a tribute album to his father Stan Gibson who led Jon to the Christian faith in 1981) included the song “I’m on a mission.” A portion of the album funding was raised through Kickstarter. Soul Scan Music released it on an independent record label, and engineer Dennis Moody mixed it.

Musical Style and Training
Jon is writing, arranging, producing most of his albums, and plays most of his instruments. Comments Jon, “I’m not a trained musician. I’ve never played music in school. I dropped out of school in grade 9.
I don’t know how to read and write notes. I don’t play with any proper technique; I’m just grabbing instruments and playing them. I figured out everything I’ve learned to play, so I’m not the best musician, but if you give me time, without people coming around, pressing me. It takes me longer, but I get more of the feeling I really want if I play it myself.”
Jon employs The Groove Masters, an eclectic soul band. In 2005, Prince hired Jon’s band to cooperate with Justin Timberlake, Herbie Hancock, Maroon 5, and Matthew McConaughey for his Golden Globe Award house party. Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Donny Hathaway compared his voice.
