When Jonny was 16 years old he decided to join the United States Naval Special Warfare Command. For the remaining high-school years he decided to physically condition himself for the rigors of Special Warfare training. In 2002 he enlisted with the United States Navy as a seaman recruit.
Jonny was later assigned to SEAL Team 3 with the rate Special Warfare Operator. He has been deployed twice to the Middle East. He participated in over 100 combat missions as a combat medic, sniper, navigator, and point man. In 2009, Kim was accepted for commissioning.
When he graduated from USD in 2012 and left the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps, Kim entered the Medical Corps. During his time with the SEALs, Kim served with PO2s Marc Alan Lee and Michael A. Monsoor.
