Jony Ive Biography

Jony Ive (Jonathan Paul Ive) and also known as Sir Jonathan Paul “Jony” Ive, KBE, HonFREng, RDI) is a British national and a United States citizen. He is an industrial designer who is the former Chief Design Officer (CDO) of Apple and the serving Chancellor of the Royal College of Art in London.

Ive joined Apple in 1992. He designed products for Apple for ten years before being promoted to Senior Vice President of design. Among his designs are the iMac, Power Mac G4 Cube, iPod, iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and parts of the user interface of Apple’s mobile operating system iOS.

Jony left England for the United States in the early 1990s and began working for Apple. He became a full-time employee in September 1992. He mainly designed the decade’s PowerBooks and Macs. His first major assignment in Apple’s industrial design group regarded the second generation of the Newton and the MessagePad 110.

There were design failures and lack of commercial success in the early 1990s and this prompted Ive to nearly quit several. Steve Jobs managed to recruit Ive to join him in taking the firm in a new direction as he staged a return to the company having been ousted by other Apple executives in 1985.

In 1997, Jony became the senior vice president of industrial design after the return of Jobs, and subsequently headed the industrial design team responsible for most of the company’s significant hardware products. He first designed the iMac which paved the way for other designs such as the iPod and the iPhone and the iPad.

He was given his own design office at Apple during the early 2000s in which he oversaw the work of his appointed design team. He was the only Apple designer with a private office.

Ive was announced as the leader of Industrial Design on 29 October 2012 in addition to providing leadership and direction for Human Interface (HI) across the company. His title was also updated in 2013 to Senior Vice President of Design, following the year’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) announcement of iOS 7 and his role as principal.

An announcement was made in on 26 May 2015, that Ive was promoted to chief design officer (CDO). He became one of only three C-level executives at Apple then, along with CEO Tim Cook and CFO Luca Maestri. Jeff Williams would be promoted to COO at the end of 2015. On June 27, 201, Apple made an announcement that Ive would be leaving the company to start an independent firm titled LoveFrom that would work with Apple as its primary client.

Ive was appointed Chancellor of the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London effective 1 July 2017. His new title was announced on 25 May 2017. He is the Head of College on a fixed five-year term. He began running committee meetings, attending faculty meetings, and conferring graduate degrees in the summer of 2017.

As a result of his work as a designer, Ive has received a number of accolades and honors.
