Jorma Ludwik Kaukonen, Jr. is an American blues, folk, and rock guitarist who was ranked #54 on its list of 100 Greatest Guitarists by Rolling Stone magazine ranked him.

He performed with Jefferson Airplane and still performs regularly on tour with Hot Tuna, which started as a side project with bassist Jack Casady, and as of early 2019 has continued for 50 years.

In 1965, Kaukonen was invited by friend and classmate Paul Kantner to join a rock band that he formed with Marty Balin. Kaukonen was initially reluctant as a self-described blues purist but found his imagination excited by the arsenal of effects available to electric guitar, and later remarked that he was “sucked in by technology.”

With the group still looking for a name, Kaukonen suggested the name Jefferson Airplane, inspired by an eccentric friend who had given his dog the name “Blind Lemon Jefferson Airplane. “When their original bass player was fired, Kaukonen recommended his friend Jack Casady (who still lived in Washington D.C. at the time) as a replacement.

While never a prolific singer or songwriter during his Airplane career, Kaukonen contributed material to each of the band’s albums; most noticeably, the instrumental “Embryonic Journey,” an arrangement of “Good Shepherd,” “Third Week in the Chelsea” (which detailed his feelings about the band’s disintegration) and “Trial by Fire” – all of which he continues to perform.

Kaukonen ‘s primary guitar was a Gibson ES-345 as a member of Jefferson Airplane, noted for the visible Varitone dial on the guitar and the signature 345 logos on the headstock. Currently, Kaukonen endorses Martin Guitars. In 2010 the Martin M-30 Jorma Custom Artist Version was released by Martin Guitars.
