O’Brien was born on May 3, 1993, in Co. Tipperary, Ireland. He was raised by his father Aidan O’Brien and his mother Anne Marie. O’Brien grew up with his brother Donnacha and two sisters Anastasia, who is famously known as Ana and Sarah O’Brien. His grandparents were Stella O’Brien and Denis O’Brien.
In 2009, O’Brien won a bronze medal at the European Pony Championships and was among the three jockeys who shared the Irish champion trainee jockeys’ title in 2010. In 2011, O’Brien won his first classic race, the Irish 2,000 Guineas, on Roderic O’Connor. Aidan and O’Brien, 19, became the first father-son/trainer-jockey combination to win The Derby, with Camelot in 2012.
O’Brien broke a 20-year-old record with a treble at Navan to get his 117th winner of the season in October 2013 and beat the previous record set by Mick Kinane. He completed the 2013 season with 126 winners and retained his Irish Champion Jockey title.
