Josh Koscheck Career
Ultimate Fighting Championship
As a middleweight fighter, Koscheck appeared on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter. He won a unanimous decision over Chris Leben to advance to the semifinals, where he was defeated by Diego Sanchez in a split decision. On April 9, 2005, at The Ultimate Finale, Koscheck won his first official UFC fight with a first-round KO over Chris Sanford.
Following this victory, Koscheck went on to defeat Pete Spratt at UFC Ultimate Fight Night in his welterweight debut. After suffering his first career loss to Drew Fickett due to a rear-naked choke, Koscheck has gone on to win three more fights. Koscheck then defeated Jonathan Goulet via strike submission at UFC Fight Night 6.
Koscheck has been training at the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, California, since 2006, and attributes his vastly improved kickboxing technique to his time there. On December 13, 2006, Koscheck faced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Jeff Joslin, at UFC Fight Night 7, which he won by unanimous decision.
Koscheck was then scheduled to face Diego Sanchez at UFC 69 on April 7, 2007. This was the second meeting between the two Welterweights. Sanchez won a split decision in the first fight, which did not count towards Koscheck’s official record because it was considered an exhibition match for The Ultimate Fighter television taping. During the event’s weigh-ins, Sanchez shoved Koscheck during the traditional post-weigh-in staredown.
Despite Sanchez’s continued yelling at Koscheck, no conflict erupted. Koscheck won a unanimous decision over Sanchez in their fight (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
Koscheck outstruck Sanchez in all three rounds and only attempted a takedown once. During his post-fight interview, Koscheck repeatedly exclaimed, “Nineteen-and-one,” referring to Sanchez’s first MMA defeat (including the two fights from The Ultimate Fighter). UFC President Dana White revealed a few weeks later that Diego Sanchez had an undiagnosed illness prior to and during the fight, which turned out to be a serious staph infection.
Koscheck was defeated by Georges St-Pierre in a unanimous decision at UFC 74 on August 25, 2007 (30–27, 29–28, 29–28). Throughout the fight, St-wrestling Pierre’s skills were on display by outwrestling Koscheck, scoring takedowns, stuffing Koscheck’s takedown attempts, and maintaining top position for the majority of the fight.
Before the fight, there was speculation that Koscheck would out-match St-Pierre on the ground due to his credentials, but St-Pierre was confident that he was a better wrestler, striker, and submission specialist than Koscheck. Josh made his UFC 82 debut, defeating Dustin Hazelett via TKO due to strikes at 1:24 of the second round.
At UFC 86, he defeated Chris Lytle by unanimous decision after repeatedly taking him down and cutting him badly with “ground and pound” elbows.
Due to Diego Sanchez’s injury, Koscheck agreed to step in and fight Thiago Alves at UFC 90 on just two weeks’ notice. Koscheck was defeated by unanimous decision. Alves landed powerful leg kicks and dropped Koscheck multiple times during the fight. Koscheck fought Yoshiyuki Yoshida in the main event of UFC: Fight for the Troops on December 10, 2008, and won by KO in the first round by landing two devastating straight right punches to Yoshida’s head.
The Japanese fighter remained on the canvas while being attended to by commission doctors before being carried from the Octagon on a stretcher as a precautionary measure. He was later treated and released from a local hospital after being diagnosed with a concussion.
The UFC awarded Koscheck a $60,000 bonus for Knockout of the Night. At UFC 95, he faced promotional newcomer Paulo Thiago. Koscheck was knocked out in the first round by the debuting Brazilian. Thiago connected with a right uppercut and a left hook as Koscheck lay motionless on the canvas.
After the fight was stopped, Koscheck stood up and claimed that he was still alert and capable of defending himself. Shortly after the stoppage, Koscheck was seen calmly offering the referee his thoughts on the stoppage: “Too early – just a little bit too early.” Koscheck was scheduled to face Chris Wilson at UFC 98, but he was forced to withdraw due to a foot injury sustained in training.
At UFC 103, he defeated returning veteran Frank Trigg by TKO (punches) in the first round. Koscheck was supposed to fight Mike Pierce at UFC Fight Night 20 on January 11, 2010, but instead faced Anthony Johnson at UFC 106 on November 21, 2009.
Koscheck defeated Anthony Johnson by rear-naked choke at 4:47 of the second round on November 21, 2009. In the first round, Koscheck blocked a knee to the head while on the ground with two knees. Koscheck collapsed to the ground, clutching his face, prompting the referee to intervene and deduct a point from Johnson.
Commentators accused Koscheck of faking the knee impact, which appeared to miss Koscheck’s face on replays. In multiple interviews, Koscheck has stated that he was reacting to an eye poke rather than the knee.
Koscheck poked Johnson in the eye twice in round two, causing Johnson to be given time to recover. As a result of the controversy in both rounds between the fighters, many fans believe it should have been declared a No Contest.
He singled out Dan Hardy, the top contender in the Welterweight division, in his post-fight interview. Koscheck was scheduled to face Paulo Thiago again at UFC 109, but was forced to withdraw due to an injury and was replaced by AKA teammate Mike Swick.
Welterweight contendership
Koscheck was signed to fight Paul Daley at UFC 113, which he won unanimously. The fight, like his fight with Anthony Johnson, was not without controversy, as Koscheck faked being hit with an illegal knee, resulting in a point deduction for Daley. After the final bell, Daley approached Koscheck and delivered a sucker punch, causing him to be restrained by the referee.
Dana White stated in an interview following the event that Daley would never fight again in the UFC. “He will never come back, I don’t care if he’s the best 170-pounder in the world,” White was quoted as saying.
He’ll never return here. That is not an excuse. After the bell, you never hit a guy like that.” Koscheck expressed a desire to face Tito Ortiz at a catchweight after his fight with Daley, owing in part to Ortiz’s mockery of Mark Coleman after his defeat at UFC 109.
Koscheck served as a coach on Season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter in 2010. The season 12 finale aired on December 4, 2010, with the main event featuring two fighters from Team Georges St-Pierre (Michael Johnson and Jonathan Brookins). At UFC 124, Koscheck fought for the UFC Welterweight Championship against Georges St-Pierre.
Josh’s well-known animosity toward St-Pierre stemmed from his loss by decision in their fight at UFC 74, so UFC 124 was heavily hyped. St Pierre used his left jab effectively in the fight, winning all three rounds and defeating Koscheck by unanimous decision 50-45.
During the fight with St-Pierre, Koscheck suffered a broken orbital bone on the right side of his face. Because he couldn’t fly due to air pockets around his right eye, the UFC arranged for Koscheck and his trainer to drive to Boston, where he underwent corrective surgery.
Post-title shot
On September 24, 2011, at UFC 135 in Las Vegas, Koscheck defeated former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes via KO in the first round, filling in for an injured Diego Sanchez. Koscheck was scheduled to face Carlos Condit at UFC 143 on February 4, 2012.
However, on December 7, 2011, it was revealed that Georges St-Pierre had suffered an ACL injury to his left knee, which would sideline him for approximately ten months and force him to withdraw from his scheduled fight with Nick Diaz.
Condit and Diaz fought at the event, with the winner crowned interim UFC Welterweight Champion, while Koscheck fought Mike Pierce. He won the fight by a unanimous decision.
On May 5, 2012, at UFC on Fox 3, Koscheck faced Johny Hendricks. He was defeated by a split decision. Koscheck was scheduled to face Jake Ellenberger at UFC 151 on September 1, 2012. However, Koscheck withdrew from the fight due to a back injury.
On February 23, 2013, at UFC 157, Koscheck faced returning veteran Robbie Lawler. Despite being able to take down Lawler several times during the fight, Koscheck was defeated by TKO at 3:57 of the first round after being rocked by a knee to the head while shooting for a takedown, then finished with punches on the ground by Lawler. Koscheck was scheduled to face Demian Maia at UFC 163 on August 3, 2013.
However, Koscheck was forced to withdraw from the fight due to an injury, and as a result, Maia was also removed from the card. On November 16, 2013, Koscheck faced Tyron Woodley in UFC 167. He was knocked out in the first round of the fight. On February 28, 2015, Koscheck was briefly linked to a fight with Neil Magny at UFC 184.
The match, however, was canceled, and Koscheck instead faced Jake Ellenberger at the event. Koscheck was defeated by submission in the second round. Just 21 days after his defeat to Ellenberger, Koscheck stepped in for an injured Ben Saunders to face Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 62 on March 21, 2015. Koscheck was defeated in the first round by submission.
Bellator MMA
On June 26, 2015, Bellator MMA announced that Koscheck had signed a multi-year contract with them. Koscheck was scheduled to make his welterweight debut against fellow welterweight Matthew Secor on January 29, 2016, in his hometown of Fresno, California, and was also scheduled to be the main event.
On January 31, 2017, it was announced that Koscheck’s previously postponed Bellator debut would take place on February 18, 2017, at Bellator 172 against Mauricio Alonso. He was knocked out in the first round by a TKO. On June 28, 2018, Koscheck announced his retirement from MMA.
