Review: Julia Jentsch stars in ’24 Weeks’
Synopsis: Heart-wrenching drama about a pregnant woman who is a famous stand-up comedian, but behind the scenes is bearing the burden and turmoil of deciding whether to abort her baby when she learns it has both Down’s Syndrome and a life-threatening heart condition.
Scorecard: 9 (out of 10). No sugar-coating it. This is as intense as a movie gets. It’s tough. It’s challenging. It’s draining. It pulls at your heart strings and gives you that uncomfortable feeling in your gut, but it’s so powerful and so performed, that the experience is worth the toll it takes. Of course, I haven’t seen every movie at the film festival, but I would be stunned if there was a better acting performance than that of lead actress Julia Jentsch in this film.
Jentsch is a revelation, as they say. She is believable as a stand-up comedian on one hand, yet so real and tortured as a woman forced to make the most personal of choices. We feel all the same angst and go through all the stages of grief she does as she makes the agonizing decision of whether or not to have a Down’s Syndrome baby with a malfunctioning heart. The supporting performances also added heft to the weight of this drama. When it ended, the audience I was with just sat in silent union. No one got up. Eventually we collected our things, and walked out without saying a word, still hypnotized by the journey we had just traveled. This movie takes a lot out of you, but it gives even more.
