Julian Morris Interview
WHY ACTOR JULIAN MORRIS WALKED AWAY FROM ‘PRETTY LITTLE LIARS’
Tell me about Hand of God.
JULIAN MORRIS: Hand of God is something I’m very excited about. It’s a new show for Amazon, written by Mark Forster and it stars Ron Pearlman and myself. It’s a dark story of vengeance with these despicable characters that are—at their core—very human. But as despicable as they are, I think we can empathize with their situation. I play an actor-turned-con-man-turned-preacher who is on a mission to sell a mega-church in California. Then, I see my number-one prey, the person who is going to help facilitate this is Ron Pearlman’s character. So, I do all I can to get every single dollar I can from him. And in doing so, take the two of us down a rabbit hole of encouraging him to do all the wrong things that he shouldn’t be doing.
You’ve been acting for a long time, both in your native England and here.
JM: My first acting gig was when I was 12. I played this kid pushed into the LSD trade in this TV show called The Knock in Britain. Then, from that, I had the good fortune of playing the young roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company, which is an amazing foundation of incredible actors. But, at that stage in my life, I wasn’t like, “This is my career. I’m an actor.” I think you have to earn that title. I’m still trying to earn it. At the time, it was just fun: “This is what I enjoy doing after school.”
At 18, you had to make the ultimate choice between school and acting, right?
JM: Yeah, so that choice was, I had a place at university to read English. I was on my gap year and I had all these travel plans. I love animals, so I was going to go off to Namibia to be a game ranger there. I couldn’t wait and then I had a meeting with an agent in London and I asked the guy “I want to pursue acting, what should I do?” and he said, “Look, I’ll represent you right now, let’s see how it goes.” And in a month I had a lead in an NBC pilot. So, I did the pilot, and then there’s that length of time where NBC is deciding whether or not to pick it up and in that time I had to decide, “Okay what do I want to do? Do I want to pursue this acting thing and go out to LA or stick around and go off to University and do what I probably should do?” And of course, I didn’t.
So you moved to LA?
JM: Well, I visited LA, had the time of my life, and then the pilot didn’t happen. I had said no to university and couldn’t go back, so I was like, “I’m royally f–ked now.’ And then I met Steven Daldry on the train. You know, he directed Billy Elliot, and I had this heart to heart with him and his advice was just, “Follow your heart, go for it.” So, I went out in January and stayed on my agent’s couch. I got my first US gig, directed by Jim Nelson who produced Kevin Costner’s film Dances with Wolves and won an Oscar for that. […] Then I found myself in Pretty Little Liars and Once Upon a Time, which was really great.
