Julianne Hough (Julianne Alexandra Hough) is an American actress, dancer, and singer. Hough is a two-time professional champion of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

She was also nominated for a Creative Arts Primetime Emmy in 2007 for Outstanding Choreography in season five of the show. Julianne’s first leading acting role was in the 2011 film remake of Footloose. She joined Dancing with the Stars as a permanent fourth judge in September 2014.

Hough along with her bother and Tessandra Chavez won the won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography in 2015. She then played Sandy in the live Fox television production of Grease in 2016.

She was born to Marianne and Bruce Hough in a Latter-day Saints (Mormon) family. Hough’s father was twice chairman of the Utah Republican Party. She was born the youngest of five children. She has a brother Derek Hough who is also a professional dancer. Her three older sisters are Sharee, Marabeth, and Katherine. All of her grandparents were dancers. Hough is the second cousin of musicians Riker, Rydel, Rocky and Ross Lynch from R5, their maternal grandmothers being sisters.

Julianne was one of the Million Dollar Dancers in the 2006 ABC game show called Show Me the Money. She then won season four of the U.S. edition of Dancing with the Stars with her partner, Olympic gold medal-winning speed skater Apolo Ohno. This made Julianne the youngest professional dancer to win on the program. Julianne and her partner, three-time Indianapolis 500 champion Hélio Castroneves, became the winners of season five on November 27, 2007.

She returned for season six with radio host/comedian Adam Carolla, but they were later eliminated in week four. She was nominated at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards in the category of “Outstanding Choreography” for her Mambo “Para Los Rumberos” (performed with partner Hélio Castroneves) on Dancing with the Stars in July 2008.

The cast of season seven was announced, and Julianne was partnered with Hannah Montana actor Cody Linley on August 25, 2008. She then felt abdominal pains during their jitterbug performance on October 27, 2008, and was immediately rushed to a hospital following the encore performance. Hough subsequently had surgery to have her appendix removed, causing her to miss several performances but Edyta Śliwińska stood in for her. She returned to the show, although the pair was finally eliminated in the semifinals competition. Hough appeared on the November 12 results show dancing the jive to “Great Balls of Fire” with her brother for the “Design-A-Dance” contest.

She told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show on November 20, 2008 that she would not be returning to Dancing with the Stars, for the foreseeable future, to further her music career. However,Julianne  did return for season eight, partnering with boyfriend at the time, country singer Chuck Wicks. They were voted off in week eight of the competition and came in sixth place. Julianne returned to Dancing with the Stars on October 11, 2011 and danced with her Footloose co-star Kenny Wormald twice, and also with her brother.

She then returned again on May 15, 2012, in a dance performance to promote her film Rock of Ages. Julianne was guest judge in place of Len Goodman on October 7, 2013. This was the first time a former pro dancer came back to judge. She returned as the show’s permanent fourth judge in September 2014.

Julianne’s first acting role was in the 2001 feature film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in an uncredited role as a “Hogwarts schoolgirl”. She also appeared in the 2010 musical Burlesque, starring Cher and Christina Aguilera. In the film, which chronicles a small-town girl (Aguilera) who finds success at a Los Angeles burlesque club, Julianne plays a dancer named Georgia.

Her first leading role was as Ariel Moore in the 2011 remake of the Paramount film Footloose, opposite Kenny Wormald as Ren McCormack. In September 2010, filming began. It was released on October 14, 2011. Julianne played the role of Sherrie Christian in the 2012 film adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, alongside Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Malin Akerman.

Hough filmed her starring role opposite Josh Duhamel in the romantic drama Safe Haven in 2012. It is based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, which was released on February 14, 2013. Julianne also starred in the comedy-drama Paradise as Lamb Mannerhelm, which was released on October 18, 2013. Hough starred alongside Russell Brand, who had previously co-starred with Hough in Rock of Ages.

On January 31, 2016, she portrayed the role of Sandy Young for Fox’s live television presentation of the musical Grease.

Her first country-music single, “Will You Dance With Me”, was released to iTunes and Wal-Mart in May 2007. It was to raise money for the American Red Cross. The song placed at number 100 on the Billboard Pop 100 chart. Hough later signed with Universal Music Group Nashville’s Mercury Nashville division.

Her self-titled debut album was recorded in Nashville and then produced by David Malloy, who has worked with Reba McEntire and Eddie Rabbitt, among others. Her album, which was met with mixed reviews, debuted at number one on the Top Country Albums chart on May 31, and it also peaked at number three on the Billboard 200. Her second single, and the first to be released to country radio, was “That Song in My Head”.

She joined Brad Paisley’s 2008 Tour, along with Jewel and Chuck Wicks. Julianne, Paisley, and Willie Nelson appeared in the video for the Snoop Dogg song “My Medicine”.

She also appeared in a Juicy Fruit commercial in the fall of 2008, and also released an EP of Christmas music called Sounds of the Season: The Julianne Hough Holiday Collection. Hough performed her second single “My Hallelujah Song” on Dancing With the Stars on November 18, 2008, with her brother Derek Hough, lacey, and Mark Ballas Schwimmer dancing.

Julianne, LeAnn Rimes, Jessica Simpson, and Kellie Pickler announced the 2009 Academy of Country Music Award nominees in February 2009. She was nominated for the Top New Female Vocalist award, a fan-voted award, which she subsequently won. Julianne won the Top New Artist award at the 44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards on April 5, 2009, and also released a single, “Is That So Wrong”, to country radio on June 21, 2010.

Interviewer: In Rock of Ages you play a girl who moves to Los Angeles in search of stardom, and in real life you moved to L.A. at the age of 18 in search of stardom. Did you also bring a suitcase full of LPs? Because that would seem to be some impractical packing, especially if you didn’t bring a turntable with you.

JULIANNE HOUGH: Well, I was in the generation of CDs, so when I moved to L.A., I think I probably brought my Shania Twain Come on Over CD and that’s about it. But trust me, if I lived in the ’80s, I would definitely be the one going to the record stores.

Interviewer: Your character in Rock of Ages is starstruck by Tom Cruise’s rock star character. In reality, how did you relate to him on set? Did you actually become buds? Or is there sort of a “Hey, this is Tom Cruise” kind of vibe?

JULIANNE HOUGH: I think my generation will always look at him as Tom Cruise, the movie star. But the thing about Tom is that he’s super-cool, and whatever nerves I had going into a scene with him, afterwards he would say how funny it was or what a great job I did. So that really made me feel confident. But at the same time, my first scene with him was when my character, Sherrie, meets him for the first time and he says that she has a perky heart as he’s grabbing her chest, so that was definitely pretty real.

Interviewer: Tom Cruise got to second base with you. What else will it say on your gravestone?

JULIANNE HOUGH: It’s kind of great that I can say that now.

Interviewer: Did your boyfriend, Ryan Seacrest, get jealous at all that you’re doing this movie with Tom Cruise?

JULIANNE HOUGH: No, not at all. But he did come on set a couple of times and—

Interviewer: Did he threaten to wrestle Tom?

JULIANNE HOUGH: He was like, “Wow, this is a little sexy!” There was one scene we did that ended up not making it into the film, but it was a really great dance-and-vocal number—”Rock You Like a Hurricane.” It was in the strip club, and I gave Tom a lap dance in the scene. The movie flowed better without it, so I understand why it got edited out, but at the same time, I’m like, “Wait a minute. I got to do that, and it’s not even in the movie?”

Interviewer: Rest assured, that will be in the DVD extras. Rock of Ages kind of reminds us of a time when radio was dominated by sheer white-male testosterone. Do you relate to that kind of white-male aggression in music?

JULIANNE HOUGH: Well, what I love about ’80s rock music is the amazing, fantastic melodies. In pop music, it’s all about the techno beat to dance to in the club and the repetitiveness, whereas in rock music there is literally, like, balls-to-the-wall singing and playing. I love it.

Interviewer: Did everyone in the film do their own singing?

There was one scene . . . in a strip club. My boyfriend did come on set and he was like, ‘wow, this is a little sexy!Julianne  Hough

JULIANNE HOUGH: Every single person sang every single thing, which was really cool. Alec Baldwin—he sang everything. I mean, even Paul Giamatti had to sing a couple of lines. One thing I love so much about this film is that so many different actors who are so good at what they do came into this a little bit vulnerable and out of their comfort zone, and it brought out so many great things. I feel like everybody was excited and had a lot of energy because it was this new thing they were learning.

Interviewer: There’s one line in the movie when a fellow waitress warns your character that her boyfriend is about to become famous, and she says, “The spotlight doesn’t only light them up, it makes us disappear.” As an actor working in a world where so many people are striving to be successful, has that issue impacted your relationships? You’re in a relationship with a man who also gets his share of time in the spotlight. Did that line kind of resonate with you at all and your experience?

JULIANNE HOUGH: Yeah, I think there are always gonna be challenges and people throwing themselves at you in a nondiscreet way. But it’s just so public now that you have to be careful saying hi or giving somebody a hug, because then somebody will turn it into something else. So I think you’re always a lot more careful. I started out in a relationship with a guy who wasn’t in the business, and there was definitely a resentment thing that kind of happened. In the end we figured we were probably better off apart. As far as my relationship with Ryan goes, we’ve been really aware of these issues, and we work really hard at maintaining it.

Interviewer: One of your lines in the film that made me laugh out loud is when you’re talking to your boyfriend and you confess that you’ve been working as a stripper, and he’s says, “Well, I’m in a boy band,” and you say, “You win.” I know you had a conservative upbringing. How did you feel about portraying a stripper? Is it awkward when your father goes to see you in a movie like Rock of Ages?

JULIANNE HOUGH: I think it would be a lot harder for him if it wasn’t a musical. If it were a dramatic film where I’m stripping and it’s for real—taking off my clothes and doing things. My dad understands that—my family, I should say, understands that—because it’s a performance.

Interviewer: And actually your wardrobe was quite conservative, I thought, in that particular scene.

JULIANNE HOUGH: But for the scene I did with Tom Cruise that got cut out, I was in a bra and underwear, basically giving him a lap dance, so my father will probably like that scene getting cut out.

Interviewer: You better buy up all the DVDs before he gets them.

JULIANNE HOUGH: But, like I said, my dad understands that this is a profession and it’s about work and what I love to do, and as long as I’m sane in the head, then he’s okay.

Interviewer: Dancing with the Stars wound up launching your career. But I understand at some point you had a little bit of trepidation about the show because you wanted to be taken seriously as an actor. When you look back on that fear, do you feel like, Wow that was silly, because it turned out to be such a big platform?

JULIANNE HOUGH: Absolutely. A lot of people don’t know this, but when Dancing with the Stars first asked me to be on the show, I said no, because I wanted to act and to be taken seriously. And I thought that being on a reality show would hurt my credibility. But what I’ve come to realize is that being on that show completely launched my career and gave me a family and a built-in audience. My biggest fear is that people think, Oh, just because she was on Dancing with the Stars, she thinks she can act now. But I’ve been acting my whole life, which people don’t realize. I just haven’t had the opportunities that I’ve had with my dancing.
