But her chaperoning duties soon turned into a genuine interest for the art of karate and the rest, as they say, is history.

She later became really good at karate and even won a karate championship in her high school days. While attending UCLA, Karen continued to work on numerous shows on NHK in Japan, most notably those on the Disney Channel as a member of Movie Surfers.

She was also involved in the a cappella group, Medleys, during her college career. Fukuhara graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Theater.

Movie Surfers is a Disney Channel mini that appears in a commercial form where teenagers go behind the scenes of Walt Disney related films. It was about teenagers communicating with each other via webcams and getting info about upcoming Disney theatrical movies. Now it also appears after a Disney Channel movie or series ends.

In 1997 when the show began, Mischa, Lindsay, Alexis, and Marcus used a computer to surf the Internet to go behind the scenes of upcoming Disney theatrical movies. They began sitting in a screening room and talking to various actors and actresses of the movie. Later cast members included Rose, Stevanna, Josh, Jeryn and Tessa. In 2009 Disney XD started airing Movie Surfers, sometimes during commercial breaks.

Suicide Squad is a 2016 American superhero film based on the DC Comics supervillain team of the same name, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

It is the third installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is written and directed by David Ayer and stars an ensemble cast including Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jay Hernandez, Jai Courtney, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Karen Fukuhara, Viola Davis, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, and Jared Leto. In Suicide Squad, a secret government agency led by Amanda Waller recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions and save the world from a powerful threat in exchange for reduced sentences.

By February 2009, a Suicide Squad film was in development at Warner Bros. Ayer signed on to write and direct in September 2014, and by October, the casting process had begun. Principal photography began in Toronto, Ontario on April 13, 2015, with additional filming in Chicago, Illinois, and ended in August that year.

When the actress Karen Fukuhara was shooting Suicide Squad in Toronto last year, she befriended a stuntwoman who happened to be working on another film across town. Whatever that production was, Fukuhara can no longer recall, but it is assuredly not causing as much blockbuster noise as the lustily deranged comic-book tentpole that has been hotly anticipated since it was announced as DC’s answer to Marvel’s Avengers franchise in 2014.

“My friend was filming a couple of miles away,” Fukuhara, 24, recalled, “and she told me they had to stop for hours because the sound of our ammo firing traveled all the way over to their set.”

These days, superhero franchises are where movie stars go to burnish their value—and Suicide Squad, out August 5, has plenty of wattage, with Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Ben Affleck, and Cara Delevingne as Squad members. But Fukuhara is a complete unknown—Katana, the masked, blade-carrying mystery warrior who protects the Squad (the part is no mere cameo), is her first onscreen role. In anything.

“It’s very surreal,” Fukuhara said. “In the past year, my life has changed so much.” Growing up in Los Angeles, she had always been enamored by the movie industry. In middle school, she landed a gig through a friend hosting a show on Disney, in which she interviewed the cast of Disney movies, like Johnny Depp during the height of the Pirates of the Caribbean years.

But she found it hard to break through as an actress. “Coming from a first-generation immigrant family, we just didn’t know how to go about the business,” said Fukuhara, who is Japanese-American. “We didn’t even know what an agent was.”
