Karina Kling Biography
Karina Kling is currently the political/government anchor of Capital Tonight on Time Warner Cable NewsAustin. My duties include managing a team of five, fact-checking, researching, shooting, writing, producing, editing and delivering daily television news stories on air. She also moderates live roundtable discussions with politicians, lobbyists, activists, experts, etc.
The most memorable thing she remembers is that they covered Wendy Davis’ 2013 filibuster of the abortion-restrictions bill throughout the day and had wall-to-wall coverage from about 5 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.
She was anchoring the coverage from 5 until at least 11 o’clock, just trying to keep people engaged and informed, whatever side they were on. Karina felt like she was filibustering, too. She was able to take some breaks.
She once interviewed Clint Hill. Clint Hill was the Secret Service agent who jumped on the car and shielded Jackie Kennedy from the bullets.
He served under five presidents, and it was fascinating to talk to him about their personalities and how different they are.

Karina Kling Career
When still young, she knew she wanted to have a career that blended education, storytelling, and visual elements like pictures and video.
In journalism, Ishe could do all of those things. And I had always enjoyed watching political debates on TV or watching the evening news and seeing politicians being interviewed just the fact that what they were talking about mattered so much to people’s lives.
She has always covered politics. Her first job was in Lincoln, Nebraska. This is the capital city. She jumped to every political story every time.
Moving on from that job, she knew she wanted to be in a capital city. Due to that, she traveled to Texas to cover Texas politics.
she also helped viewers gain an understanding of why politics matters. She did this by engaging people daily.
It didn’t matter whether it’s brought in [a guest] who can inform people about a subject matter, or trying to push people to register to vote, or trying to make sure people know about election dates. There is such a problem in Texas with the actual turnout.
By observing the Texas Legislature, she had to relearn the two chambers and the complicated process of getting a bill passed.
This was after moving from Nebraska. Nebraska was a unicameral legislature. She tried to make sure people know how it works and the fact that they can go to the Capitol to have their voice heard. There is public testimony for each of these bills, and people are really able to participate in the process.

Here are some things you might not know about Karina:
- I was a vocal performance major in college and went back and forth about going into broadcasting or heading to Broadway. I’m definitely happy with the choice I made but continue to sing, play piano and a little guitar (and flute). I also spend a lot of time going to see live music in Austin.
- She credits the above to my parents being theatre professors at Sterling College for 40+ years. I have three brothers and they are all involved in the arts as well…an actor, computer-animator and musician.
- My high school forensics team has a pretty impressive winning record.
- I was part of the team during the 13-year streak and the pressure to keep it going was always strong.
- When I was younger, I was a competitive race walker in the Amateur Athletic Union and traveled the country for track meets. At one point, I was ranked second in the nation in my age group. I competed in the 1500m and my fastest time was 8:50. (As pictured, I got 3rd at the AAU Junior Olympic Games in 1992)
- I have retired my race walking shoes for running shoes and you can find me on the trail most mornings. But I did play some sports in high school: Tennis, basketball, and cheerleading.
- I was on Jimmy Kimmel in 2013. Oh wait, you all know that…
- I hid in a cabinet in college until the night security guard left so I could lock myself in an edit bay and finish my senior thesis project. Part of it had been deleted and I needed the extra time and ended up pulling an all-nighter. Our college president found out about it and suspended me for the week of Thanksgiving break.
- I love taking pictures and I guess would consider myself an amateur photographer.
- I’ve climbed two Colorado Fourteeners but have never skied.
- I randomly met Lisa Ling at a restaurant in China while there on a choir tour in graduate school.
