She was born to Donald R. Kennedy who was a judge and attorney, and Dione Marie ‘Dede‘ a one-time theater actress. She has two siblings her twin sister Connie who is an executive producer of the Virtual Production company Profile Studios and Dana Middleton-Silberstein, a tv host and anchor, and press secretary/communications director for former Governor Gary Locke (D-WA).
In 1971, she graduated from Shasta High School in Redding, California. She later attended the San Diego State University where she majored in telecommunications and film. In her final year, she got employed at a local San Diego TV station, where she worked in various roles including video editor, floor director, camera operator and finally KCST news production coordinator.
She went on to produce a local talk show entitled You’re On for the station for four years before moving to Los Angeles after her employment with KCST. She secured her first film production job working as an assistant to John Milius, who at the time was executive producer of Spielberg’s in Los Angeles.

She was hired by Steven Spielberg as his assistant. She agreed with Spielberg that she was a terrible typist who was kept on only because of her good ideas in production. In 1981, she was credited as an associate to Spielberg on Raiders of the Lost Ark, then associate producer on Spielberg’s production of Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist in 1982.
She also received credit for ith Spielberg on the box-office success E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and continued serving her role on most of his films for the next three decades. She helped co-found and run the hugely successful production company Amblin Entertainment with Spielberg and her husband Frank Marshall in 1982. In 1984, she produced Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom together with George Lucas and Frank Marshall. In the film’s opening sequence she appeared as a dancer. She rose to become one of Hollywood’s leading producers after her great work on the Indiana Jones films.
She produced the Back to the Future trilogy, collaborating with directors like Martin Scorsese, Robert Zemeckis, Barry Levinson, and Clint Eastwood while she worked with Amblin. She later took over a large portion of running Amblin and served as its president till 1991, when she formed The Kennedy/Marshall Company together with Frank Marshall. She continued with her business ties with Spielberg and went on to become an executive producer in 1993 for both Schindler’s List an historical drama and Jurassic Park.
She was awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award in 1995. In 2007, she was awarded Women in Film’s Paltrow Mentorship Award, for showing extraordinary commitment to mentoring and supporting the next generation of filmmakers and executives.
She stepped down from Kennedy/Marshall, leaving her husband Frank as sole principal of their film company in May 2012. In June 2012, she became the co-chair of Lucasfilm Ltd.alongside George Lucas. When Disney bought Lucasfilm from Lucas, she was promoted to president.
Her contract to remain as the president of Lucasfilm was extended for another three more years, through 2021.
