Troccoli was born on June 24, 1958, in Brooklyn, New York, United States, and was raised in Islip Terrace, Long Island, New York, in a Catholic family, which was not particularly religious. She graduated from East Islip High School.
After completing high school, Troccoli studied jazz and opera at the Berklee College of Music in Boston for one year, then returned to Long Island to major in voice at Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) while singing with a SCCC-based jazz band and afterward singing in Long Island clubs. As of 1998, Troccoli was a practicing Roman Catholic but presently she identifies as a non-denominational Christian.
Rise to Fame
Troccoli rose to fame through her alto voice, when the group she opened for Ed Nalle’s group, GLAD, performed at the Long Island church she attended in 1980. Roughly six months later, Nalle invited Troccoli to record a demo tape, with his band’s backing, and Troccoli accepted.
After she and GLAD had recorded it, the tape was submitted to Dan Harrell (Amy Grant’s brother-in-law) and Michael Blanton. After hearing it, these two formed the Reunion Records label, in Nashville, particularly to record Troccoli.
Additionally, in 1982 Troccoli’s debut album, Stubborn Love, was reportedly the best-selling debut album by a contemporary Christian music female artist. In 1984, she released a second album, Heart and Soul; which led to her receiving her first Grammy nomination in 1986.
