Katja Ebstein Biography
Katja Ebstein (Karin Witkiewicz) is a German musician born on 9th March 1945 in Girlachsdorf, Germany. She represented West Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest three times (1970, 1971, 1980). She is the most successful performer to have taken part in the contest, without ever winning. She is the only singer to appear in the top three on three separate occasions.

Katja Ebstein Career
Katja Ebstein began her career while in school she used to sing in art and student pubs. She was active in the songwriting and jazz scene. In 1964 together with three other musicians appeared for the station, Free Berlin ‘in the ARD program’ Marmeladentopf ‘on. Later, she caught the attention of Berlin producer and composer Heino Gaze, who engaged her several times for the background.
In 1965 she released her first single ‘Somewhere, Somehow’ and in 1966 she released her second single ‘Where’s the Ship’ in collaboration with Gaze.
She sang under the name ‘Katja’, due to lack of success she went back to being a background singer. She met with producer and composer Christian Bruhn, who she later married.
Katja Ebstein met Siegfried Loch, the German boss of an American record label, at the ‘Festival Chanson Folklore International’ in Hunsrück who signed her. She released two singles ‘The Wire in the Sun’ and ‘When the Rain Falls’ before releasing her debut album ‘Katja’ in 1969.
In 1970 she participated in the ‘Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson’ and from then on was increasingly seen on television. With ‘wonders there again and again’ she won the German preliminary round for the
‘Grand Prix’ in 1970 and reached third place in the final.
In 1980 Katja Ebstein reached the 2nd place at the ‘Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson’ with ‘Theater’. In 1981 she moderated the German preliminary round.
In 1970 she was voted ‘Best Singer’ after she participated in the International Song Festival ‘in Rio de Janeiro. Later, she toured with the James Last and Paul Kuhn orchestras. In ‘A Kessel Buntes’ had
Ebstein 1972 their first GDR appearance.
In the 70s and early 80s she appeared in several music shows. In the 80s, she also played a lot of theater. In the 90s Katja Ebstein went on tour with a poetry program.
Katja Ebstein has starred in programs such as ‘Musical Showstar 2008’, ‘Let’s Dance’ and the ‘Eurovision Song Contest’ preview on TV screens.
