Keala Settle Stroke
On 24th February 2018 Keala suffered a ‘ministroke’ while rehearsing in Burbank, California eight days before her performance of ‘This Is Me’ at the 2018 Academy Awards. The ministroke caused her to lose half of her body’s motor functions. She was diagnosed with a rare cerebrovascular disorder called Moyamoya disease. Doctors found that half of her brain had been blocked from blood flow and oxygen for years, due to collated carotid arteries.
During an interview with People magazine she said: “I was completely rundown, I had gotten food poisoning in Tokyo, I was fighting a cold. I barely had anything left to give. It was like someone cracked an egg on the top of my head and then drew a line on my body, turning one half off. My body started drooping immediately. I tried to put my hands up to my face, but I could only move my left arm. I couldn’t talk because part of my tongue was immobile. I tried to stand, but there was nothing. I was panicked. I let out this wail because I was so scared and the room went silent. All I could figure out how to say was ‘Help’.”
After the diagnosis Keala decided to post pone her surgery in order to perform at the Oscars.

“I have a new brain and that’s meant starting over. I needed a blood transfusion to help move, and then I spent the entire first month doing a lot of cognitive and physical therapy to relearn how to walk, talk, write, and live life again. I’ve been growing my memory, too. It’s all a process and I’m still working on it daily.”
Keala said the experience had a positive experience on her life.
“It’s shifted me in ways I’m still understanding. The way that I look at the world is so completely different. I’m more at peace than I’ve ever been; I can find the joy in things I never could. This truly gave me another lease on life. The universe had its chance to take me and I’m still here. I’m just so grateful to be alive and I’m not giving that up.”

I had the privilege of working with him on a 54 Below project called Bright Lights, Big City a few years ago. It was an amazing experience and I was hoping someday to have the chance to work with him again. And it’s here!”
