Keegan Michael Key Biography | Who Is Keegan Michael Key?

Keegan-Michael Key is an American actor, writer, comedian, and producer. Key starred in the Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele (2012–2015) and co-starred in the USA Network comedy series Playing House (2014–2017). He also spent six seasons as a cast member on Mad TV (2004–2009) and has also made several guest appearances on the U.S. version of Whose Line is it Anyway? on The CW.

Key also appeared in the first season of the FX series Fargo in 2014, and has had a recurring role on the sixth and seventh seasons of Parks and Recreation from 2013–2015. He then hosted the U.S. version of The Planet’s Funniest Animals on Animal Planet from 2005 until the series’ end in 2008.

Keegan has had supporting roles in several films, including Let’s Be Cops (2014), Tomorrowland (2015) and Pitch Perfect 2 (2015). He appeared at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as the character Luther, President Barack Obama’s anger translator also in 2015. He also produced and starred in the 2016 film Keanu with his Key & Peele co-star Jordan Peele. He made his Broadway debut in Steve Martin’s comedy Meteor Shower in 2017.

Keegan joined the cast of Mad TV midway into the ninth season. Key and Jordan Peele were cast against each other so that FOX could pick one black cast member. If you receive a Christmas Card this year from Penn State coach James Franklin and family, take a second look.

Before Saturday’s Blue-White Game at Beaver Stadium, Franklin’s wife, Fumi, and daughters Shola and Addy took a photo with actor Keegan-Michael Key, a Penn State graduate who has become a friend of both the Franklins and the football team.

Franklin’s family liked the photo so much, they plan to share it this holiday season. In fact, the coach was concerned that his wife was a little too fond of the picture.

“I had not seen my wife that happy in a long time,” Franklin said. “I mean, her face just lit up. I wasn’t completely comfortable with that.”

For the past three years, Franklin and Key have developed a friendship that goes beyond the jokes about their resemblance. Key did his first Franklinimpression for the team three years ago, has done guest picks as Franklin on ESPN’s “College GameDay” and even discussed Penn State’s “icing” of Georgia State’s kicker in 2017.

The appearance prompted so many angry emails to Franklin that he addressed it a week later — after Penn State’s last-second victory over Iowa.

“That was not me,” Franklin said. “It’s somewhat ridiculous that I have to say that, but we do look a lot alike.”

Key is such a part of the program that he has been offered a window into the world of recruiting, which was a big part of Saturday’s spring scrimmage. Having about 160 recruits on hand to see Key do his Franklin impression certainly was good for the program.

But how did Key become such a Penn State fan? Born in Detroit, Key followed the team as a kid through family friends from Pennsylvania. That helped him, in part, to choose Penn State to pursue a master’s of fine arts. He got to know some players during that time by teaching acting for non-majors at the university.

In 2015, Penn State invited Key to be grand marshal of the homecoming parade. Someone told him, “You look a little like the new head coach.” The rest is history, he said.

“If our genes being similar in some way, shape, or form, is one more thing that brings me back to the program and gives me a sheer love for the program, so be it,” said Key, who, at 47, is a year older than Franklin.

Key, who sang the alma mater with players after the game, said he thought the Lions looked “spry” Saturday. And he offered his character of McCringleberry (a “post-post-post doctorate” student) as a potential tight end.

More seriously, Key said Franklin has infused a “new energy” into Penn State football, and the two bonded regarding the coach’s academic plan for his players.

“We are in like minds on what a student-athlete is,” Key said. “I get very excited when I see him get excited about how well his students do. I get very excited when his students get privileges for having better GPAs. It’s lovely that academics are as important to him.”

After the game, Franklin remained stuck on the family photo. Key’s fiance further had suggested that the actor wear some midsection padding to better mimic their differing physiques. That made Franklin wince as well.

“Obviously I need to get on the treadmill,” Franklin said.
