Wildlife warns sticky traps not only catch spotted lanternflies but other animals
PHILADELPHIA – At this point, we pretty much all know our mission when it comes to spotted lanternflies. Kill them. “Squish as many as you can even if you have a new pair of shoes on ya,” says Matt Seekers.
Seekers probably never envisioned a day where he’d have a baggie full of bug eggs in his possession, but that’s exactly what he says Google told him to do when he spotted the invasive species all over his Manayunk balcony.
Experts are urging people to scrape off any eggs that they see to prevent the spread of the tree-eating pests. “We killed quite a few, probably about 20 confirmed kills, and then we took out all the egg nests as well,” says Seekers. There’s another method that is very effective, but its trapping other animals as well
Michelle Wellard, Assistant Director of the Philadelphia Metro Wildlife Center says people are building their own traps by putting sticky tape around the tree. In the past few months, they have gotten dozens of calls for trapped woodpeckers and more.
“In addition to a red-tailed hawk, bats, flying squirrels, and other birds, and they often die,” she says. “We had one woodpecker who had its tongue ripped out by the sticky paper and the homeowner was so distressed because she was trying to do the right thing.”
Wellard says she recommends putting chicken wire or hardware cloth around the trap and leave a small gap for the lanternflies to get in.
If you do accidentally trap an animal, she urges people not to touch it. Instead, place paper on the other sticky sides of the trap put the entire trap into a box, and call the center at 267-416-9453.
Kelly Rule Cherry Hill thunderstorm
Neighbors help neighbors clean up after swift-moving Cherry Hill thunderstorm
CHERRY HILL, N.J. – A stormy night leaves damage and power outages behind in Camden County. People in Cherry Hill woke on Sunday to much damage in their neighborhoods and spent the day cleaning up.
“We couldn’t even get out to go to mass. It’ll take a few days, but we’ll get it cleared up,” said Salvatore Isvara. Not how Iuvara and his neighbors expected to spend a beautiful Sunday morning. “Thank God we all survived it,” Iuvara added.
Fallen trees and power lines blocked both sides of his block on Bedford Avenue, a block from Chapel Avenue. And, across his backyard, branch after branch, a common theme throughout his neighborhood and others, on the west side of town following Saturday night’s thunderstorm. One that appeared to hit their area worse than anywhere else.
“Stuff was flying all over the neighborhood. All you could hear was, in our backyard, were trees cracking and crashing to the ground,” Iuvara explained. “We were lucky that it fell the way it did. If it had been the other way, it would’ve fallen directly into the bedroom and that’s where we’re sleeping.”
“The wind was coming down in all different directions. It was like a mini-cyclone. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Annette Campbell stated.
The aftermath quickly made it a busy night for Cherry Hill police. They shut down several roads overnight through the morning because of downed trees and wires. But, the cleanup quickly became a team effort. Neighbors helping neighbors. “We were very lucky,” Campbell added.
Even clearing out the main road and drains, not in front of their own homes. A long morning of work, but one they say could be so much worse. “God just blessed us that nothing fell through the house and hurt anybody,” Iuvara said.
