Kelvin Gastelum vs Israel Adesanya full fight video preview for UFC 236 co-main event

By the end of the weekend, New Zealand could have a UFC champion as Israel Adesanya takes the next major step in his remarkable career.
In only his sixth appearance in the world’s premier mixed martial arts promotion, the undefeated Kiwi will attempt to capture the interim middleweight title against Kelvin Gastelum in the co-main event of UFC 236 in Atlanta.
Here’s all you need to know about Sunday’s (NZ time) showdown.
First of all, what’s an interim title?
Interim titles are awarded when the champion is unable to compete for a long period of time. It prevents the top end of a division from stalling and once the original champion is able to return, they are generally required to fight the interim titleholder in a unification bout.
Critics argue the interim tag dilutes the value of a title and is just a way to boost pay-per-view buys.
It is essentially a belt for being the No 1 contender. Although, if the original champion does not return or suffers another lengthy delay, the interim champion usually becomes the undisputed champion. This was the case for reigning middleweight king Robert Whittaker, who was promoted when Georges St-Pierre vacated the crown at the end of 2017.
So, how did this fight eventuate?
Gastelum was due to meet Whittaker in February only for the latter to withdraw on the eve of the fight with an abdominal hernia.
With Adesanya promised a title shot for his victory over Anderson Silva on the same card, the UFC opted to pit him against Gastelum and grant interim status, with the winner expected to face Whittaker later this year.
Is Adesanya the first Kiwi to fight for a UFC title?
No, that would be heavyweight great Mark Hunt, who fought Fabricio Werdum on short notice for the interim belt in 2014, losing via second-round TKO. WhiKelvin Gastelumttaker was also born in Auckland but has spent virtually his entire life in Australia.
Adesanya, however, is the first New Zealand-based fighter to achieve the honor. Even Hunt was living across the Tasman by the time he joined the UFC. Adesanya was born in Nigeria and moved to Rotorua at the age of 13. He has learned his entire craft in this country, developing into a world class kickboxer under trainer Eugene Bareman before breaking into the UFC.
What’s Gastelum’s story?
When Gastelum came from obscurity to win ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ reality TV series in 2013, few would have thought it would take this long to earn his first title shot.
The 27-year-old Arizona native made a promising start to his UFC career at welterweight. But weight cutting issues forced him to move up a division and a year later he received a 90-day ban after testing positive for marijuana metabolites.
While he lost his return bout to former champion Chris Weidman, Gastelum has been on the rise since, with wins over another ex-champ, Michael Bisping, and perennial contender Jacare Souza propelling him up the rankings.
Initially, his style was built on elite-level wrestling but the southpaw’s striking has evolved over the years. He now possesses some of the best boxing in the division, with six KOs to his name.
What are the experts saying?
The bookmakers may favor Adesanya but an ESPN survey of some of the world’s leading MMA trainers gave a slight edge to Gastelum. Four tipped the American for the upset compared to three for Adesanya, while one trainer was on the fence.
Adesanya is a $1.51 favorite at the TAB, with Gastelum paying $2.44.
Where to for the winner?
As mentioned above, Sunday’s winner is set to meet Whittaker for the undisputed title when the latter is cleared to return. For Adesanya, that would mean a trans-Tasman blockbuster against Whittaker, most likely in Sydney or Brisbane, and quite possibly the biggest MMA event to be held in this part of the world.
