He was brought up in the LeFrak City housing projects, where he grew his love for basketball at a young age. Anderson went to Archbishop Molloy High School in Briarwood, Queens, which was considered one of the best basketball prospects in America when he was a sophomore there.
After graduating from high school, Anderson went to Georgia Tech University, where he played for the Yellow Jackets basketball team. Also, Anderson was a two-time All-ACC selection at Georgia Tech, and he led the team to the NCAA Final Four in 1990.
