Athi Water Services Board Description
Athi Water Services Board (AWSB) is a state corporation under the Ministry of Water and Irrigation constituted to provide water and sewerage services in Kiambu East, Kiambu West, Gatundu, Thika, and Nairobi.
The Board is created under Section 51 of the Water Act 2002 covers an area of about 15,000 square kilometers and a population of over 4.5 million.
Athi Water Services Board is one of the eight water service boards created to bring about efficiency, economy, and sustainability in the provision of water and sewerage services in Kenya. The Board received its license to carry out this mandate from the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) on 5th April 2004.
Its main functions are:
- Ownership and holding of water and sewerage assets;
- Planning, development, and expansion of water and sewerage infrastructure;
- Contracting out water and sewerage service provision to water service providers also referred to as water companies
- Monitoring water and sewerage services provision in its area of jurisdiction.
Improvement of water services provision to the community is the number one priority.
Athi Water Services Board has therefore put in place elaborate mechanisms to secure political and social support amongst the stakeholders. These mechanisms include a strategic approach to engaging all the stakeholders as partners in this journey.
