Founded in 1960, Daily Nation is Kenya’s and the region’s most widely read daily newspaper. It has a strong heritage in objective, truthful and candid reporting of the day’s political affairs. It is the only newspaper in Kenya subscribed to The Audit Bureau of Circulation.
With over 200,000 copy circulation Daily Nation and its sister paper Sunday Nation had a market share of 53% in 2011. Their market share was 74% in 2013.Their main competitor is The Standard, published by the Standard Group.
There are about 7,500 shareholders of the Daily Nation newspaper with its major shareholder being an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network: Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development. The group has employed strategic methods in news and media marketing. Apart from selling hard copies of the newspapers, digital versions of The Nation and The East African are sold to subscribers coming to the newsstand, maintaining web portals for the online editions of the daily, weekly and Sunday titles with links to its other titles, across the East African region. These web portals are accessible online with more than 3 million visitors coming to the website every day. It’s free to access the portals.
Daily Nation continues to be important for the democratic development of Kenya, and is an inspiration to journalists throughout Africa, it has also been criticized because of how it treats it’s employees. In January 2007, the company fired 7 journalists only for being a member of the Kenya Union of Journalists, a union which campaigns for fair pay and good working conditions for journalists, and for freedom of the press.
