Signs of his failing health came to the fore when he was sworn in to the 13th Parliament with an oxygen tank strapped on his body.

Francis Nyenze’s family reveals his 10-year fight with cancer
The late Kitui West Member of Parliament Francis Nyenze, who died on Wednesday (December 5), had been battling Colon Cancer for 10 years, his family has revealed.
Speaking at the Lee Funeral Home, where the late Nyenze’s body was moved, the family disclosed his health took a toll on him which saw him admitted at the Nairobi Hospital for the past three weeks.
According to the family, the former legislator preferred to keep his condition from the public until the August 8 General Election when he contracted pneumonia during his campaigns, which affected his lungs greatly.
During his swearing-in at Parliament Buildings on August 31, 2017, Nyenze carried an oxygen tank into the chambers, a sign that he was not in good health condition.
He was reportedly responding well to treatment by last evening when a few members of parliament went to visit him. Nyenze was in the company of some of his family members when he passed on at around 7.15am aged 60.
President Uhuru Kenyatta mourned Nyenze, eulogizing him as legislator who served his constituents with commitment and dedication.
“I have known the late Nyenze since the time he was a Cabinet Minister under President Moi’s administration, he was always keen on preserving our unity and nationhood. I urge all of us to emulate his leadership style,” said President Kenyatta.
In a statement sent to newsrooms, the National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders led by Raila Odinga mourned Nyenze’s demise terming him as, “a dedicated and outspoken leader who always stood by what he believed was good for his constituents and his nation”.
Various leaders from across the political divide also took to social media to pass their messages of condolence.
Born in 1958, Nyenze got into parliament in 1997 when he was elected MP for Kitui West on a KANU Party ticket.
He became a close political ally to then President Daniel Moi who appointed him Minister for Environment before transferring him to the Heritage and Sports Ministry during a Cabinet reshuffle in 2001.
Nyenze served as MP for one term before he was trounced in the 2002 elections by his then rival, Winnie Nyiva Mwendwa. He, however, made a comeback in 2013 when he reclaimed his position, which he successfully defended in the 2017 election.

Francis Nyenze: Nasa line up raw deal for Kambas, we will not play second fiddle
National Assembly minority leader Francis Nyenze has said the NASA line up is a raw deal for the people of Kamba.
ODM leader Raila Odinga was named as the National Super Alliance flag bearer.
Raila will face off President Uhuru Kenyatta of Jubilee with Kalonzo Musyoka as his running mate.
NASA brings together Raila, Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Musalia Mudavadi (Amani), Moses Wetang’ula (Ford Kenya), and Isaac Rutto (CCM).
But addressing the media, Francis Nyenze said the coalition should have respected the MoU signed between Raila and Kalonzo in 2014 before naming Raila the flag bearer.
“In my own opinion the Kamba nation got a raw deal and we do not want anybody to take Kamba’s for a ride,” Nyenze said.
Nyenze said “new people” were brought into the coalition to circumvent the whole process.
“It would be a very difficult task to convince the Kamba nation to be the second fiddle in 2017,” he said.
Francis Nyenze claimed that the committee tasked with selecting the NASA flag-bearer had selected Kalonzo up to the last minute.
“I was in the team and up to the last minute, Kalonzo was the flag bearer. How it changed we still do not know. We were all taken aback,” he said.
Nyenze said the Wiper party leader should talk to them before they take any other action.
“We need to talk and decide on a way forward. We cannot assume that our people will follow the instructions. They have to know why they should vote for NASA.” he said.
“If I don’t fight for the Kamba nation who will?”
Under the arrangement, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi is proposed to take up the position of Premier Cabinet Secretary as earlier reported by The Star.
This will be created after the election in the event of NASA victory. Under the Premier CS will be two powerful deputies of equal rank.
Rutto will be in charge of the State Department of Devolution and Planning.
The other deputy in charge of Public Service will go to Wetang’ula of Ford Kenya party.
The announcement of the August 8 polls team was made at Uhuru Park on Thursday by Mudavadi.
The principals have been under pressure to name the person who will battle it out with Uhuru.
