The Great Kenyan Bakeoff follows 12 amateur bakers over the course of 10 weeks as they go through a series of baking challenges all in a bid to find the next Great Kenyan Baker. The Great Kenyan Bakeoff Episodes
Season 1 of the Great Kenyan Bake Off will have 10 episodes aired across 10 weeks every Monday at 8 pm on KTN.
The Great Kenyan Bakeoff Launch
At the launch, Host Mwikali introduced the audience to Chef Nick Ndenda from the Hilton (JKIA) and Chef Agnes from Le Grenier a Pain. Both chefs took the audience through simple steps on how to make sure you bake the right cupcakes and what each flour in Unga’s wide range of EXE flours is used for. Speaking during the event, Unga Group CEO Nicholas Hutchinson said that UNGA Limited has been part of Kenyan traditions for decades and that it was an honor to provide a platform for young bakers to make a mark.
“For us at UNGA it is very exciting, we celebrated our 110th year anniversary just the other day and to celebrate this legacy and traditions one of the issues we have is that for the new emerging populations UNGA doesn’t mean very much and this for us is important as we try to move forward and connect our brands with you and other emerging bakers. We are very excited about the Inspiring a Nation to Bake theme. It is a chance for Kenya to enjoy,” said Hutchinson.
In between all of this, Chef Nick took enthusiastic participants from the crowd through short baking related competitions which saw two winners emerge after winning a cupcake decorating competition and the other an ingredient tasting competition. Everyone was a winner, however, at the end of the night with each attendee receiving a hamper from Unga which included an apron, flour, and rice. The event was also graced by the who’s who in the baking and communications industry including but not limited to PSCU Digital Communications Director Dennis Itumbi.
Itumbi praised the organizers for rolling out the competition that he says will impact skill, build experience and create opportunities for the youth.“Cakes have a story and that is the bottom-line,” said Itumbi. Speaking on the sidelines, Chef Nick said that TGKBO was a chance for the baker at heart to shine.
“This show could not have come at a better time. Space is great, the time is right, the talent is ripe and the need for it is unmeasurable. It has a huge potential in the country and offers an unmatched platform for bakers across the board. I know it will project an excellent outlook on baking and in terms of our viewers, it will give them new material,” said Nick.
On TGKBO, one contestant will be eliminated while another will be named the star baker each week in a mouth-watering march to crown Kenya’s ultimate baker. The night was appropriately capped off with a delicious 3 layer cake courtesy of Le Grenier à Pain which was almost instantly devoured by the attendees. Managing Director, Nick Hutchinson, Standard Group Head of Department (CM&C) Irene Kimani and Amber Prior from the QBF Production team cut the cake to officially launch the call to action for applications.

The Great Kenyan Bakeoff Judges and Presenters Profile
Celebrity Chef, Adventurer, Sportsman, husband and father, Kiran Jethwa is regarded as Kenya’s first celebrity chef and widely recognized for his adventurous approach to cooking. Kiran left Kenya to study Hospitality Management at the University of Manchester and whilst there, he began working in restaurant kitchens and fell in love with the environment and industry. He decided to move around and work for a variety of different restaurants to develop his skills and teach himself to become a chef. Returning home to Kenya Kiran opened the well known Seven Seafood & Grill, The Good Food Company and CrossFitKwetu in Nairobi.
Equally at ease in the kitchen and in front of the camera, Kiran has spent the last few years combining his love of both worlds: for the National Geographic, Channel 4 (UK) and Fox International (USA) Kiran has been the face of ‘Extreme Food’, ‘Food Unwrapped’, ‘Spirited Traveller’ and ‘Tales from the Bush Larder’.He now brings his disarming charm, steely gaze and superior knowledge of flavors to The Great Kenyan Bake Off.
Myra Kivuvani Ndungu
Entrepreneur, baker, wife and mother, Myra Kivuvani has been in the media industry after she achieved her Undergraduate degree in International Relations at USIU. She then studied her MBA in Global Management at the Swiss Management University. After years of working as a Client Service Manager, Myra took her love of baking to the next level. She went to London to develop her cake baking and decorating skills and came home to Kenya where she began a small cake business of her very own.
And so ‘MK Special Occasion Cakes’ was born. By 2015 MK Cakes had grown so much that Myra had to move out of her home kitchen and had to look at opening her own bakery. In 2017 Myra opened the first Le Grenier a Pain in Africa; she now brings her impeccable style, poise and love of baking to The Great Kenyan Bake Off.
June Gachui is an Advocate of the High Court, Intellectual Property Specialist, thespian, songwriter, dancer, Master of Ceremonies, closeted comedian, moderator, not-so-closeted comedian, and godmother!
June studied law in both the U.K. and the U.S.A. and returned home to Kenya where her career has branched into the performing arts: June is an Improv. comedian with the popular show, ‘Because You Said So’, she has also been a presenter on TV and radio shows, and now brings her bubbly personality, love of chocolate and opera singing skills to The Great Kenyan Bake Off!
Nick has been seen and heard throughout Kenya for many years: as a screen actor in several hit TV series including “MTV Shuga” (MTV Base) and “Jacob’s Cross” (M-Net) and “Selina” (Maisha Magic East) and the award-winning movie “18 Hours” and as a radio presenter on some of Kenya’s biggest stations. Nick likes things that are loud, colorful and full of expression (which is probably why he gets on with June so well!)
Nick’s mantra in life and work are the same: “If it ain’t fun, run!”, which is why he (unlike some contestants) won’t be leaving The Great Kenyan Bake Off tent for a while!

Why Professional Chefs Cannot Contend For The Great Kenyan Bakeoff
The format of the great Kenyan bake-off is presently restricted to amateur bakers. We define amateur bakers as those who bake at home and are not making their main source of income through baking. In the future, we are considering additional formats that will be communicated at later dates.
How Were The Contestants Selected For The Great Kenyan Bakeoff Show
We announced a call for applications to amateur bakers across the country through TV, Radio, Print, and Digital media. All applications were done through the bake-off on the website: www.thegreatkenyanbakeoff.com.
Phone interviews were then conducted with the applicants to shortlist the top 50. From these, the judges and the production team then sampled bakes and interviewed the shortlisted applicants in person. They then selected the final 12 bakers that would participate in the show.
