Timothy Wanyonyi is a passionate Kenyan lawyer and politician serving as a member of parliament representing the people of Westlands, Nairobi County. He was first elected as a councilor for the defunt Nairobi City Council in the 2007 election, prior to being elected Westlands MP during the 2013 elections, and defended his seat in the 2017 and 2022 general elections held on 8 August 2017 and 9 August 2022 respectively.
He is a half-brother to Moses Wetangula, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya and former senator for Bungoma County. He is a member of the Orange Democratic Movement. Wetangula established the Kenya Paraplegic Organisation. He is in the Azimio la Umoja coalition movement that lost in the 2022 general elections.

Timothy Wanyonyi Career
Hon Wanyonyi is one of the founders of KPO, he is Kenya Paraplegic Organisation (KPO) executive director. The organizers of the ‘Bring Zack Back Home’ campaign which was aimed to build the first spinal injury rehabilitation center in Kenya. He once narrated to the Nation newspaper how he was confined to a wheelchair. Tim said that in 1998, carjackers shot him just a few meters after dropping a friend in Ngara Estate, Nairobi.
“I had to travel to a rehabilitation center in Belgium. It cost my family 10 million shillings ($117,000) for a three-month stay at the hospital. The Kenyan embassy in Brussels, Belgium, stood guarantee until we finished paying the amount two years later,” he said.
His struggles in accessing treatment motivated him and other paraplegics to start a spinal cord rehabilitation center in Kenya. Before Zachary Kimotho’s (Zack) campaign, the organization would hold fundraising twice every year, where they would collect about Sh 1 million. With that money, they bought a 12-acre plot of land in Kiserian, where the 150-bed facility was to be built.

Wanyonyi had never in his most outlandish visions imagined he would be a politician, leave alone an MP after he nearly lost his life in a carjacking happening about 21 years ago. Sufficed with purpose and motivation, Timothy was new out of law school and was working at his elder brother Moses Wetangula’s law firm, Wetangula and Company Advocates when tragedy smashed and left him restricted to a wheelchair.
“I had a young family, my children had just celebrated their first birthday, and my wife was not working. I was very new in the career, out of college saying when I get out there I want to be A, B, C, D I want to be like so and so,” said Timothy.
In an interview with Citizen TV, Timothy remembered the terrible carjacking happening that saw his whole life come to a standstill. “I heard someone shouting, shoot him. Something hit me in the back and all of a sudden I completely lost myself, I fell down. I tried to stand up, I couldn’t. They put me on a pickup truck and rushed me to Aga Khan Hospital that very night.
“That was the longest distance I have ever traveled in my life despite Ngara and Agha Khan being just a kilometer apart. “It was so painful, it was like I was not going to make it,” he said. Based on Wanyonyi, he didn’t think his injury was as bad and after surgery, was hoping to heal and leave the hospital soon.
This nevertheless reversed when his doctor told him that he had an endless spinal cord injury and may not be able to walk again. After obtaining treatment and being discharged Timothy resumed work but things were not the same.
