Wendy Waeni Mother
‘I’ve never tasted the alcohol,’ Wendy Waeni’s mother denies mismanaging funds
Kenyan gymnast Wendy Waeni’s mother Magdalene Syombua has come out to strongly refute claims that she mismanaged funds given to her by various prominent personalities in support of the teenager’s talent.
This comes after Wendy’s embattled ex-manager Joe Mwangi, in an interview with Ebru TV on Monday, accused Ms. Syombua of wasting away all the money on alcohol.
However, speaking to Citizen Digital on Tuesday, Ms. Syombua rubbished the allegations, adding that she does not even drink alcohol because she is “a staunch Christian.”
“I’m a staunch Christian, I have never had alcohol in my life, my daughter can attest to that. Joe Mwangi is a liar and a fraud that is why it was the best fit that he no longer manages my daughter,” she said.
She further accused Mr. Mwangi of only giving her a little share of the money from the large sums he was usually given by various politicians as well as media personalities to aid in developing and promoting her daughter.
“He received money from politicians in the name of my daughter; he got Ksh.140,000 from Raila Odinga and only gave me Ksh.30,000,” she added.
Ms. Syombua also alleged that Mr. Mwangi demanded an unnecessarily large share of money from the amount Rwandan President Paul Kagame gave her on behalf of her daughter in 2016.
“During our trip to Rwanda, President Paul Kagame gave me Ksh.500,000 to support Wendy’s talent, I shared the money with Joe by giving him Ksh.200,000 but he still demanded more,” she said.
“Joe only accompanied Wendy to Rwanda, I could not allow him to accompany my daughter to her performances outside the country since I had noticed peculiar behaviors from him.”
According to her, the former manager also confiscated and denied Wendy access to her phone and only recently returned it after the 14-year-old’s shocking revelation on Citizen TV’s Jeff Koinange Live (JKL).
“Joe confiscated my daughter’s phone on claims that she was visiting unauthorized sites; he declined to return the phone to me until recently after the interview (on JKL). I felt offended considering I was the one who had bought the mobile phone,” she said.
Wendy, during the Wednesday interview on JKL, shocked the nation when she revealed that she has not received a single penny from her performances across the globe for the past five years.
“I’ve been performing all over the world, and right now I live in Huruma because of Joe Mwangi. I’ve performed in Rwanda, Germany, and China…and I’ve not got even a single penny. My mum is really suffering right now, she sells sweets, I live in Huruma in a single-room with her,” she said.
“People are telling me that I’m rude, that I’m a brat, that I post things on Instagram…which I don’t really know. I don’t have access to my social media accounts, it’s Joe Mwangi who controls them.”
Mr. Mwangi on Tuesday, however, went on a Twitter rant alleging that Wendy was coached by three individuals on what to say during the interview.
Wendy Waeni Mother Admits
Wendy’s mother admits receiving money from Joe Mwangi
I used to receive small amounts of money from Joe Mwangi, Wendy Waeni’s mother Magdaline Syombua has revealed. In an interview with Radio Jambo on Monday, Syombua said that her daughter’s ex-manager would give her amounts of Sh20,000.
“Nimekua nikipata kidogo kama elfu ishirini (I have been receiving small amounts of Sh20,000 from Joe),” she said.
Syombua said she was not aware of what the daughter was lamenting about on national television. The teenage acrobat on last week on JKL ‘opened up’ on how her ex-manager exploited her.
The globally-recognized gymnast and Unicef Ambassador said she performed across the world, but Mwangi did not give her or her family a single penny.
She blamed her ex-manager for making away with all the money.
“I have performed all over the world but I’ve never gotten a penny from it and that is because of my previous manager [Joe Mwangi]. I live n a single room in Huruma with my mother,” Wendy said.
She said that her mother currently sells sweets and cigarettes late at night in order to afford the rent for their single-room shack in Huruma.
“My mother is really suffering. She’s working right now (10 p.m). She sells sweets and cigarettes at night and we’re in this situation because of Joe Mwangi. Ever since I started performing across the globe, my mum has never gotten a single penny,” Wendy said.
The teenager said that Mwangi also locked her out of all her social media accounts and sometimes made controversial posts that left many followers unimpressed and questioned her morals.
“It’s really so sad when people tell me I’m rude, I am a brat because I post things on Instagram which I don’t really know. I don’t have access to my social media accounts. It’s Joe Mwangi who controls them,” she said.
Mwangi in his defense on Monday said he confiscated Wendy’s phone because the internet was corrupting the young girl’s morals.
In an interview with Ebru TV on Sunday evening, the former teenage acrobat manager narrated how he had been monitoring Wendy’s internet usage before taking her phone.
“All this story does not have to do with money. In April I was with Wendy in Mombasa and you cannot imagine what she had been doing with her phone. That’s why I took it,” he said.
Asked to disclose what inappropriate content Wendy was browsing, Mwangi said, “Wacha nisiseme (let me not reveal) but imagine what can make me confiscate a child’s phone?” he chuckled.
Mwangi said after he confiscated her phone he arranged for a meeting with the mother to explain why he took the phone.
“I showed Wendy’s mum what her child was browsing but the mother insisted I give her back the phone. She would monitor her herself. I refused and this is what triggered Wendy to go lament on JKL,” he said.
Wendy Waeni Manager Joe Mwangi
Joe Mwangi apparently took on Waeni as a talent, representing her as her manager. According to Mwangi, he confiscated the gymnast’s phone because of the inappropriate content she searched for online. The Star reports, that though he arranged for a meeting with the mother to explain why he took the phone, the two could not come on an agreement on Wendy’s online habits.
The warring sides involved various third parties including comedian Chipukeezy, and Mathare MP Honorable Oluoch to try to resolve the matter for the sake of Wendy’s future.
As Waeni and her mother took to media outlets to claim that he only forwarded a small percentage of the contortionist’s earnings to her mother, Mwangi may have dug himself into a hole revealing some questionable details about his relationship with the duo.
Not only did he claim that Waeni’s mother is an alcoholic, but Mwangi also pointed out that gymnast is a porn addict. Moreover, he went on to share some intimate sexual messages, that even saw him send an image of his appendage to the minor.
But these allegations are questionable given the poor reputation Joe maintains, with many finding the claims unsettling and horrific. Joe took to Twitter to share screenshots of what he claims Wendy was searching online. Among them are some pornographic sites that indicate some nauseating searches Joe claimed Wendy made as well as some private chats.
Teenage contortionist Wendy Waeni’s former manager Joe Mwangi has publicly defended himself overexploitation allegations made against him.
While speaking on the Chipukeezy show on Ebru TV on Monday night, Mr. Mwangi further clarified that the only trip he accompanied Wendy for was to Rwanda following an invite from President Paul Kagame.
Mwangi also claims that when Wendy performed in Germany and China he was not with her.
He even displayed his passport to Chipukeezy to prove that he has not been to other countries where Wendy performed.
“Ndiyo his passport yangu unaweza confirm everything, juu nimeambiwa nimetravel all over the world na mtoi. I have only traveled with her to Rwanda. Let me be very clear Kagame gave Mama Wendy five hundred thousand shillings, then as a manager Mama Wendy gave me Sh100,000,” Mwangi said.
“As an artist, you can only get paid when you perform, and the last time Wendy performed is over two years ago. This is because last year Wendy was in class eight so I talked to Mama Wendy and agreed to give this girl a chance to concentrate on her studies. Then now she is in high school and 90 percent of the time she is in school, so where is this money supposed to come from?” he posed.
Mwangi further blamed Wendy’s mother for their current financial predicament.
He also dismissed claims that ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna canceled a cheque meant for Wendy because he (Mwangi) wanted it to be written in his name.
“You know politicians are very funny, kuna screenshot nimesubmit between my conversation with Sifuna, and I told him this cheque doesn’t have to bear my name because ni vitu walikuwa wanataka kumnunulia. I told them to buy and Wendy will come and pick these things,” he said.
Mwangi says he only wants the truth to come out.
“This issue has nothing to do with money. You know hawa watu wameniaccusse on so many things. I have tried to reach out to them and they have no goodwill of settling this issue,” he said.
Wendy Waeni Joe Mwangi Arrest
Updated on 30th August 2019
Detectives hunt for Wendy Waeni’s ex-manager
Detectives are looking for Joseph Mwangi alias Joe the former manager of popular teen acrobat Wendy Waeni, over forgery claims.
Officers at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations say Mr. Mwangi is wanted in connection of a fake threatening letter sent to Wendy’s mother, Magdalene Mbele, purported to have come from an unnamed Cabinet Secretary.
Early this month, Wendy and her mother accused Mr. Mwangi of pocketing all the returns from her hard work causing a Twitter storm.
Wendy, 14, became a sensation after her performance before President Uhuru Kenyatta and his counterparts from Rwanda and Ghana on Jamhuri Day 2014.
She said in a television interview aired on August 7 that she has wowed audiences in different places in the world but has little to show for it.
“I have been performing all over the world. I’ve performed in Rwanda, Germany, China and I’ve not got even a single penny,” she said on Citizen TV.
But Mr. Mwangi said the family has received thousands of shillings and gave an instance when they were given $5,000 (Sh515,750 in today’s rates) by Rwandan president Paul Kagame in 2015.
He added that he has even gone the extra mile to source school fees for Wendy and to give cash to her family for other expenses, citing Sh100,000 he gave Wendy’s mother in December 2018 to facilitate her admission to secondary school.
Wendy’s mother, on her part, said that the fame her daughter has received has not translated to monetary gain.
She told reporters earlier this month that when she asked Mr. Mwangi about the income from Wendy’s shows, “he said that for all that time, they were just advertising her; that nothing (monetary) was coming from it,” said Ms. Mbele.
The dispute has led to Wendy dropping Mr. Mwangi as her manager and replacing him with Becky Wangari.
“Right now I live in Huruma because of Joe Mwangi,” Wendy said during the interview.
“My mum is really suffering right now as we talk. I know she is working right now (past 9 pm). She sells sweets and we live in a single room in Huruma.”
Prominent personalities also weighed in on the matter, among them ODM’s secretary-general Edwin Sifuna who recalled an incident where he addressed a cheque to Wendy’s foundation but Mr. Mwangi demanded that it be in his name.
“I canceled the whole thing,” tweeted Mr. Sifuna.
